Married GOP Congressman Allegedly Gave Young Female Staffers Pink and Blue Handguns

Chuck Edwards, a Republican congressman from North Carolina, has come under scrutiny as the House Ethics Committee has initiated an investigation into multiple allegations of sexual harassment and fostering a hostile work environment. The 65-year-old politician’s conduct has raised numerous concerns, including reportedly giving personalised handguns to two young female staff members.

According to a recent report by Axios, which surfaced on July 20, 2025, Edwards allegedly gifted each staff member a handgun—one pink and the other blue—amidst accusations which suggest a pattern of inappropriate conduct. Edwards, who has been married to his wife Teresa since 1980, is also said to have arranged a surprise performance of Ed Sheeran songs for one staffer, indicating a troubling mixture of personal affection and workplace professionalism.

This investigation is not the first time Edwards has dealt with allegations that raise eyebrows about his behaviour towards staff. Previous claims include sending a lengthy note to a former staff member, where he detailed personal feelings and recited poetry, as well as taking the same individual on a trip to the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas. Such actions have drawn scrutiny not only from political opponents but also from advocates for workplace ethics.

Edwards, who worked as a McDonald’s franchise owner and holds credentials as a licensed firearm dealer, has defended his actions. In response to the allegations about the handguns, he stated, “I taught several staff members to shoot and handle weapons… in some cases, I provided them with their own.” The congressman emphasised his belief in firearm safety, viewing guns as tools for self-defence when owned by law-abiding citizens.

However, not all staff have regarded these gifts positively. An attorney representing one of the former staff members indicated that she had reluctantly accepted the handgun due to fear of reprisals, only to later dispose of it legally, not wishing to keep it in her possession. Such concerns exacerbate the unease surrounding Edwards’ interactions with female employees.

As Edwards faces these allegations, he has publicly denied any wrongdoing, framing the scrutiny as part of a politically motivated campaign against him. In a statement made in May, he expressed a willingness to cooperate with the investigation while suggesting that the claims were fabricated by political adversaries looking to tarnish his reputation.

The House Ethics Committee confirmed it is reviewing the details surrounding the claims against Edwards, including the potential creation of a hostile working environment. This review echoes a broader trend in Congress, with recent resignations of officials amid allegations of misconduct spotlighting the urgent need for improved workplace culture.

Chuck Edwards’ political career began in earnest when he won his seat in Congress in 2022, defeating former representative Madison Cawthorn, who himself faced significant controversy. Prior to that, Edwards served in the North Carolina Senate, where he established a reputation that appealed to conservative voters.

The congressman’s district encompasses Asheville and parts of western North Carolina, and while initially viewed as a likely Republican stronghold, recent polling has indicated a tighter race against Democratic challenger Jamie Ager, a livestock farmer. Concerns regarding his conduct may have contributed to a shift in the political climate; the Cook Political Report has downgraded the district’s status to “lean Republican.”

Following the outpour of allegations, Edwards and his wife announced on July 13 that they had sold their McDonald’s locations, claiming the change was necessary to focus on Edwards’ political responsibilities. Notably, he credited his wife for managing their business effectively while he served in the legislature, highlighting a partnership that has lasted through decades of both business and public service.

Despite the investigations and burgeoning allegations, Edwards continues to enjoy support from key Republican figures, including former President Donald Trump, who has endorsed his re-election campaign, praising him as a “MAGA Warrior.”

As the investigation unfolds, Chuck Edwards’ future in Congress—and indeed his relationship with his constituents—hangs in the balance, serving as a litmus test for the prevailing political and ethical standards within the current climate.
