A mother from Sydney has tragically passed away following severe burns sustained during a backyard grilling incident intended for a family treat. Charlotte Rose-Anne Hill, aged 38, was preparing a grill for her children to enjoy roasting marshmallows during their winter break when the accident occurred. Despite initially responding well to treatment after surgery, she succumbed to complications while in hospital on 10 July.

Charlotte was reportedly setting up the grill with the hopes of creating a memorable experience for her 11-year-old son, Noah, and her 7-year-old daughter, Billie-Rose. However, the situation quickly turned chaotic when Charlotte caught fire. Her daughter yelled for her father, Matt Tierney, while Noah bravely attempted to extinguish the flames using his jacket.
Matt acted swiftly, providing first aid and transporting Charlotte to the nearest hospital where she was treated for extensive burns to her face and hands. According to her cousin, Bianca Hill, who arrived shortly thereafter, Charlotte was then transferred to a more specialised hospital equipped to manage her injuries while the children remained with their father.
Bianca recounted the harrowing experience of accompanying Charlotte in the ambulance, describing the pain and distress her cousin endured. “Watching someone that you love suffer like that… it seriously broke me,” she stated. Initially, following her surgery, Charlotte appeared to be on the road to recovery and was even able to speak with her children over the phone.
The family held onto hope for Charlotte’s recovery, as Bianca expressed in a GoFundMe post created to support Charlotte’s children and cover funeral expenses. However, the situation turned dire when medical staff discovered that Charlotte had become unresponsive due to unforeseen complications.
“I’m heartbroken, having received the worst phone call you can get,” Bianca expressed. “We’ll never hear her laugh again. We’re just so heartbroken for her children.” Those close to Charlotte remembered her as a “generous and very kind” individual, dedicated to providing her children with a happy childhood. Bianca highlighted the deep-seated wish Charlotte had to shield her kids from the pain she experienced growing up, having lost her own mother at a young age.
Max Hill, Charlotte’s brother, shared heartfelt memories on Facebook, reminiscing about their close bond throughout their lives. He noted, “From when I was a little kid to a teen, through to my journey as a father, we always had a good laugh and you always looked out for me.”
To honour Charlotte’s memory and support her children during this devastating time, Bianca initiated the GoFundMe campaign. In her message, she conveyed that while no financial assistance could ever replace the love and guidance Charlotte provided, the fundraising effort aimed to ensure her children would have the security and support their mother would have wanted for them.
