A remarkable story of resilience has emerged from Point Pleasant, New Jersey, where an 18-year-old named Matthew Polaski is on the road to recovery following a life-threatening accident while on holiday. The student, who attends the University of Alabama, experienced a traumatic brain injury after plummeting from a third-floor balcony during a family vacation in the Dominican Republic on December 28, 2025.
Polaski was discovered unconscious on the concrete below by resort staff and was rushed to a local medical facility. The severity of his injuries—both sides of his skull were shattered—left doctors uncertain about his chances of survival. He underwent emergency surgery before being transferred to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital in Miami for advanced treatment, where he remained in a medically induced coma to help manage swelling in his brain.

On January 4, after several days in a coma, Polaski regained consciousness but faced a new array of challenges. He was paralysed on the left side of his body and had sustained multiple fractures, including to his spine and pelvis. His future was uncertain, with medical experts questioning whether he would ever walk, talk, or eat again. Nevertheless, he swiftly began to defy expectations. Just two weeks later, he was transferred to the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in West Orange, New Jersey, for further recovery.
Reflecting on his time at the rehabilitation facility, Polaski expressed confidence in his path to recovery, telling his mother, “I got this. I’ll be out of here soon.” Encouraged by his determination and rapid progress, therapists worked diligently with him, and before long, he was regaining his strength and mobility, ready to embrace everyday life once more.
A month and a half after his initial treatment, Polaski met with Dr. Nitesh Patel, a neurosurgeon at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, for what would be a critical phase in his recovery journey. Dr. Patel described witnessing Polaski’s recovery as nothing short of miraculous, remarking on the rapid improvement in his neurological function. “No one in their right mind would expect a recovery that fast for someone who falls three stories like that,” Patel stated.
In a cutting-edge procedure performed on March 10, Polaski underwent cranial reconstruction using 3D-printed skull implants. Created from CT scans of his original skull, these implants were fashioned from a lightweight polymer known as PEEK. Each implant was engraved with Polaski’s name, a personal touch that symbolised his journey. The aim was not just to restore function but also to ensure his appearance remained as unchanged as possible, allowing him to feel like himself again.
Dr. Patel reflected on the rewarding experience of being involved in Polaski’s recovery and noted that the young man would continue to receive care from his neuropsychologist. Full recovery could take one to two years, but the prognosis was overwhelmingly positive based on his progress.
On July 15, Polaski shared an emotional farewell with Dr. Patel and the medical team that had supported him through his ordeal. He expressed enthusiasm for returning to the University of Alabama, where he plans to resume his studies with a double major in finance and accounting. “I truly feel at home at school there,” Polaski conveyed, highlighting that his aspiration to return to a normal life had been a key motivator throughout his demanding recovery.
“My journey has been long and challenging,” he admitted, acknowledging the difficulty and effort involved in rehabilitation. “Recovery is not easy, it’s not fun, but you’ve got to do it.” He eagerly anticipates being back on campus, reconnecting with friends and fraternity brothers, and enjoying college life, including the excitement of football season.
Polaski’s story serves as a compelling reminder of human resilience, the power of medical innovation, and the importance of a supportive community in recovery. As he prepares to embark on this new chapter at university, he carries with him a profound appreciation for life and the motivations that drive him to keep pushing forward.
