Richard Dixon, a 35-year-old resident of Queens, was sentenced this week to 25 years to life in prison after a violent incident in June 2022 left his accomplice dead. Additionally, he was handed two consecutive 15-year sentences for attempted murder, following a shootout in a parking lot that resulted in significant injury and chaos.

The incident occurred on June 19, 2022, when Dixon opened fire on two men who were waiting by their car in a parking area after leaving a party in Ozone Park, Queens. Armed with an AR-style assault weapon, he fired numerous shots at the intended victims, ultimately striking his 38-year-old accomplice, Raymond Francis, in the crossfire. The shooting was marked by reckless endangerment, as Dixon not only fired at his targets but also caused fatal injuries to Francis.

According to the Queens County District Attorney’s office, one of the intended victims sustained serious wounds from a gunshot to the jaw and back. The second target returned fire after being shot in the leg. In the course of this chaotic exchange, Francis was unintentionally shot multiple times by Dixon. After the shooting, Dixon fled the scene in a vehicle registered under his wife’s name, while Francis was found unresponsive and pronounced dead shortly thereafter at a local hospital.

Initial investigations led police to Dixon after he sought medical treatment for multiple gunshot wounds at a hospital in Nassau County. Claiming he had been shot in Baisley Pond Park, Dixon’s report was quickly dismissed when investigators found no evidence of a shooting at that location. Under scrutiny, Dixon eventually modified his account, admitting he had been injured in Ozone Park, thereby connecting himself to the violent encounter.
Investigators were able to firmly link him to the crime through a combination of cellphone records, DNA evidence found on a backpack he left behind, and traces from the vehicle used in the shooting. This evidence culminated in Dixon being charged with several serious felonies, including second-degree murder and attempted murder.
In May of this year, a court found Dixon guilty on these charges. District Attorney Melinda Katz described the case as one in which a public parking lot was transformed into “a genuine war zone” due to Dixon’s reckless actions. Katz emphasised the profound impact of his violent behaviour, which devastated not only the families of the victims but also the broader community.
While delivering the sentence on July 14, 2023, the judge remarked on the severity of the crime and the dangerous implications of using military-grade weapons in civilian spaces. Dixon’s actions not only led to the death of an accomplice, but they also left lasting scars on the individuals who survived the attack.
As the case concludes, the ramifications of Dixon’s violence serve as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by firearms in the hands of individuals willing to resort to extreme measures. This incident has reignited discussions on gun control and public safety, particularly regarding the use of assault weapons in urban areas.
The sentencing marks a significant moment in the ongoing efforts of law enforcement and legal authorities to address gun violence and ensure accountability for those who perpetrate it.
