Johnathon Schaech, known for his breakout role in the 1995 film *How to Make an American Quilt*, is proving that age is just a number when it comes to fitness and acting. At the age of 56, Schaech is currently starring in Season 2 of the series *Blue Ridge*, where he plays sheriff Justin Wise, a character that demands physical presence and strength.

Schaech first captured the public’s attention with a shirtless pool scene alongside Winona Ryder, which set the stage for a career often defined by his physique. He openly acknowledges this aspect of his early fame, reflecting, “I’ve always known I’m the guy who’s asked to take my shirt off.” Despite the passage of more than three decades, he remains committed to maintaining his fitness to meet the demands of his roles.
With a rigorous daily workout routine, Schaech prioritises his health and fitness. He incorporates a mixture of upper body exercises, including shoulders, chest, and legs, followed by 20 minutes of cardio on an incline. “I’m very strict with my diet,” he notes, highlighting his dedication to fitness regardless of any physical challenges he may face, such as lower back pain.
His commitment intensified during the filming of *Blue Ridge*, where he needed to embody the imposing nature of his character. “When you look at him, you’re like, ‘Oh, I should not mess with that guy,’” he explains. The introduction of a workout montage in the series—where his character exercises without his shirt—pushed Schaech to enhance his training regime and train like a bodybuilder.
The actor’s turn to bodybuilding came unexpectedly when he entered a contest during a break from filming. To his surprise, he clinched the top prize in the 50+ category at the Mr. Tennessee competition. “It was on my bucket list,” he shared. His success not only brought him joy but also excitement for his children, who celebrated his achievement with him.
Schaech’s journey has not been without its struggles. He openly addresses a turbulent past marked by addiction, stemming from childhood experiences of abuse. Fitness, particularly weightlifting, serves as an anchor for him. “Lifting weights is like a meditation for me,” he explains, highlighting how exercise helps him manage obsessive thoughts and compulsion. For Schaech, the gym provides a sense of calm and order.
As a father to two young children, Camden, aged 12, and Lily Jo, aged 5, with his wife, Julie Solomon Schaech, he understands the importance of staying fit. He admits that becoming a father later in life has motivated him to maintain his physical health. “I kept thinking, ‘How am I gonna beat that equation?’” he recalls, recognising the significance of being an active and present father as his children grow.
His role in *Blue Ridge*, which he feels is suitable for family viewing, stemmed from a desire to create content that can be enjoyed together without inappropriate elements. Describing the series as akin to “old school police procedural”, he appreciates that it presents a narrative free from excessive violence or graphic content.
Schaech’s relationship with Tom Hanks, a co-star from *That Thing You Do*, has also remained strong over the years. He appreciates Hanks’ ongoing support during his challenging times, especially following his move from Hollywood to Tennessee. Schaech recalls fond memories of Hanks checking in on him and sharing meals, providing a steady friendship throughout his journey.
Recently, Schaech was invited to participate in the upcoming WWII sequel *Greyhound II*, directed by Hanks. This opportunity speaks volumes about their friendship and Hanks’ belief in Schaech’s talents. Reflecting on this reunion, Schaech expresses gratitude, saying, “It was incredible that he thought enough of me to bring me back.”
As he navigates career advancements alongside personal challenges, Johnathon Schaech continues to embody resilience and commitment. With a renewed focus on fitness and a desire to engage in meaningful family entertainment, he stands as an inspiring figure for both his children and fans alike. The second season of *Blue Ridge* is set to premiere on 19 July on INSP, a testament to his lasting presence in the entertainment industry.
