According to local news reports, including WRAL and JoCo Report, both victims were occupants of the same truck at the time of the incident. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol has indicated that a preliminary investigation suggests a mechanical failure may have contributed to the crash.

The vehicle involved in the accident was a 2008 Kenworth construction crane. According to Sergeant Christopher Best from the Highway Patrol, the crane was travelling north in the right lane when it experienced a tyre failure. Following this, the driver, identified as 46-year-old Wilson Jacob Brick from Granite Quarry, North Carolina, lost control of the vehicle, which subsequently veered off the road. The truck then flipped onto the median.

Brick was quickly transported to WakeMed Hospital where he was reported to be in critical condition. However, his current state remains unclear as further updates have not been released. The other individual involved in the crash, 47-year-old Felix Guadalupe Reta from Landis, North Carolina, has sadly passed away as a result of his injuries.
In an obituary posted by Whitley’s Funeral Home, Reta was fondly remembered as a loving son, a proud Marine who served his country, and a devoted family man whose dynamic personality left a significant impact on those who knew him. His death has left a profound sense of loss among family and friends.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol has initiated an investigation into the cause of the collision. Authorities have labelled the event as “atypical” and have confirmed that tyre failure is the primary focus of their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Early reports indicate that neither speed nor alcohol were contributing factors, suggesting that the collision was primarily due to mechanical issues with the crane.
The truck involved in the incident is owned by Superior Walls Systems LLC, though it remains unconfirmed whether the driver and passenger were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident. This aspect is likely to be considered in the ongoing investigation as authorities gather more information about any possible violations of safety regulations.
As the investigation proceeds, local law enforcement is expected to interview witnesses and review any available surveillance footage from the area to gain a clearer understanding of the events leading up to the crash. Community members have expressed their condolences towards the victims’ families, with many taking to social media to share memories of Reta and offer support to those mourning his loss.
Further updates from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and Johnston County Emergency Services are awaited as they continue to piece together the details of this unfortunate incident. Road safety remains a critical concern, and the case serves as a reminder of the potential risks associated with commercial vehicles on the highways.
The community is now faced with the serious impact of this crash, and discussions regarding vehicle maintenance and road safety have intensified in its wake. As families and friends come to terms with their grief, the hope is that incidents like this can be prevented in the future.
