A man has been charged following a concerning incident at the ‘Today’ show studio in New York City. Andrew Truelove, 41, is accused of entering the NBC studio located at Rockefeller Plaza and confronting co-host Craig Melvin on Thursday, 16 July. This unusual altercation has raised alarms regarding security at one of the network’s flagship programmes.

According to authorities, Truelove allegedly shouted racial slurs during his confrontation with Melvin. Eyewitnesses reported that he also requested to see fellow co-host Al Roker, which evidently led to his quick apprehension by building security personnel. The incident unfolded earlier in the day when concerns about his behaviour prompted a call to law enforcement.

Truelove now faces a range of serious charges. The New York Police Department (NYPD) reported that these include hate crime-related charges for burglary, menacing, and criminal trespass, alongside harassment. Truelove has not yet appeared in court to respond to these charges.

Notably, Truelove has a criminal record that predates this incident. In June 2026, he admitted to committing felony criminal mischief, which involved causing damage to multiple vehicles. He was sentenced to six months in jail, followed by five years of probation and a financial penalty of $375. It remains unclear how much time he actually served of his sentence before the current issue arose.
In addition to his past conviction, Truelove currently has three ongoing criminal cases in New York, with charges encompassing misdemeanor assault, reckless endangerment, and various forms of trespassing. In these additional cases, he has entered not guilty pleas.
Craig Melvin has since addressed concerns following the incident. In a statement shared on social media, the co-host reassured his followers that he is safe and in good spirits. “I’ve heard from so many of you over the last few hours. I’m doing just fine. Thanks for reaching out. I’m looking forward to seeing you tomorrow morning on @todayshow,” he wrote, adding that he has planned a holiday starting Monday, 20 July.
In light of the disruption, NBC News released an official statement addressing the incident. They confirmed that there was a security breach at the studio. According to their account, Melvin quickly alerted security personnel, which allowed for Truelove’s apprehension without further incident. The network clarified that nobody was injured during the event.
NBC expressed that they take the safety and welfare of everyone involved with the ‘Today’ show very seriously, indicating that measures are to be reviewed in regard to security protocols. They committed to ensuring a secure environment for employees, talent, and visitors at their studios, recognising the severity of what transpired.
The NYPD further detailed the encounter, noting that an officer had been assigned to the area at the time of the incident. The officer was alerted to a disturbance at around 8:57 a.m. and promptly detained Truelove without any escalation in the situation. The police continue to investigate the matter, although no injuries have been reported.
Security incidents of this nature have raised broader concerns about how such high-profile media organisations manage safety protocols. The event is a reminder of the unpredictable nature of live broadcasting and the ever-present need for vigilance in public spaces, especially those that attract significant crowds and visibility, such as the ‘Today’ show.
As the investigation continues, there may be further developments regarding Truelove’s charges, as well as NBC’s response to improve their security measures. The network and its affiliates will likely be examining procedures to prevent similar occurrences in the future, ensuring a safe environment for both employees and audiences alike.
