**Jennifer Holliday to Be Honoured by Boston Arts Academy Foundation at Upcoming Gala**

Acclaimed singer and actress Jennifer Holliday is set to receive the Music Honoree award from the Boston Arts Academy Foundation (BAAF) at its annual gala on October 22, 2026. The announcement comes as the beloved musical “Dreamgirls,” in which Holliday originated the role of Effie White, marks its 45th anniversary this year.
At the age of 65, Holliday expressed her enthusiasm for the recognition, reflecting on her deep connection to Boston and the significant role the city played in the development of “Dreamgirls.” “Boston was where the show really began to take shape, and I have always held a special affection for the city,” she said.

During an interview with PEOPLE, the Tony Award-winning performer recalled her experience during the early stages of “Dreamgirls.” “I was only 20 years old when we did the workshops in Boston, and it’s incredible to see how far we have come,” she noted. The production underwent several changes during its time in the city, particularly regarding Holliday’s character, who was originally absent from the second act. After her powerful performance of “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going,” the creators re-evaluated the song’s placement in the show due to the audience’s enthusiastic response.
Holliday has fond memories of her connections with the Boston audiences, many of whom had not heard a voice like hers before. “I hadn’t performed for a primarily white audience and was uncertain how they would react to my soul-filled sound. Their warm reception made me feel embraced and boosted my confidence significantly,” she shared.
The BAAF’s HONORS gala serves as a vital fundraising event to support Boston Arts Academy, the city’s only public high school dedicated to the visual and performing arts. This year’s theme, “Come Dream With Us: A Masquerade Ball,” will honour influential figures across various disciplines, including music, dance, fashion, and film, in addition to civic leadership and sports.
As Holliday embarks on this new chapter in her career, she acknowledges the challenges she has faced, including her battle with multiple sclerosis and mental health struggles. “The entertainment industry can be ruthless, and I have had my share of trials. Knowing that BAAF promotes wellness and mental health is very encouraging to me,” she revealed.
Looking ahead, Holliday is excited about her busy schedule, which includes performing at the Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood in the upcoming weeks. She is also preparing for a discussion at “Honors on the Vineyard” on Martha’s Vineyard, where she will delve into topics related to culture and artistic endeavour.
In addition to her performances, Holliday is in the process of creating a new album, titled “Dream Woman.” Although she originally aimed to release it by the fall to coincide with the anniversary of “Dreamgirls,” she now anticipates a spring release, having collaborated with various songwriters and producers during a recent trip to Copenhagen.
The Boston Arts Academy Foundation’s 2026 BAAF HONORS gala promises to be a landmark event, celebrating the contributions of those making a positive impact in the arts. Tickets for the masquerade ball at MGM Music Hall at Fenway will be available for advance purchase at baahonors.org.
As she gears up for her upcoming honouree status, Holliday embraces her renewed energy and the opportunity to reconnect with her legacy. “At this stage of my life, I feel revitalised and open to new experiences. I’m excited about the future and everything it holds,” she concluded.
