The Fury 325 roller coaster, a key attraction at Carowinds amusement park in Charlotte, North Carolina, has been closed indefinitely following the discovery of foundation issues during routine maintenance inspections. This closure, which occurred on 7 July, has left thrill-seekers disappointed, as the ride is renowned as one of the premier roller coasters in America.
According to statements from park officials, the issue arose during a scheduled maintenance check, prompting them to proactively remove the ride from service. “On 7 July, we identified an issue with a ride foundation,” a spokesperson for Carowinds explained through multiple media outlets. “We immediately notified state regulators and commenced the repair process to address the concerns.”

Despite the alarming nature of the foundation issues, the park has assured the public that guest safety remains a top priority. The officials stated that the concerns did not pose a direct risk to visitor safety, emphasising that they took precautionary measures regardless. However, details surrounding the exact nature of the foundation problems and a timeline for reopening the ride were not disclosed. The spokesperson added, “We look forward to reopening the ride as soon as the work is complete.”
Oversight of the Fury 325’s evaluation is being conducted by the North Carolina Department of Labor (NCDOL), specifically its Elevator and Amusement Device Bureau. Commissioner Luker Farley asserted that the department issued a shut-down order as a precautionary measure. The iconic roller coaster will not resume operations until a thorough re-inspection by the NCDOL has been completed and safety can be assured.

This incident marks a notable recurrence of issues for Fury 325. The ride previously closed in June 2023 after a visitor spotted a visible crack in one of its support pillars. Footage from that time showed a ride vehicle navigating the track as the crack was temporarily exposed. Further inspections revealed additional cracking in other support beams, leading to extensive repairs. The attraction was reopened in August after crews installed a new steel column, crafted by the well-regarded Swiss design consultancy Boliger & Mabillard.
Martin Lewison, an associate professor of business management and an authority on amusement park operations, commented on the unusual nature of these recurring problems. With over 2,600 roller coasters ridden, including Fury 325, his expertise prompted concern over the frequency of significant issues for a ride of this calibre. “It’s highly unusual for a coaster of this age to experience multiple major defects,” he remarked.
Lewison expressed hope that any necessary repairs would be manageable within a reasonable timeframe. He noted the reliability record of Six Flags, the parent company of Carowinds, stating, “This company has a great safety record and tends to produce well-made rides with minimal downtime. It is surprising to see the same ride encountering two significant incidents.”
The closure of Fury 325 is a setback for Carowinds, which has positioned itself as a leader in amusement park attractions since the coaster’s debut in March 2015. Known for being North America’s tallest, fastest, and longest giga coaster, Fury 325 reaches an impressive height of 325 feet, features a thrilling 81-degree drop, spans 6,600 feet in length, and accelerates to speeds of 95 mph.
Despite intentions to expedite the reopening process, visitors to Carowinds face an uncertain wait as both the park and regulatory authorities assess the coaster’s safety. Carowinds has not provided an estimated timeline for returning the ride to operation, leaving fans speculating on when they might once again experience the adrenaline-pumping thrills of Fury 325.
As the situation develops, Carowinds patrons and amusement park enthusiasts alike will keep a close eye on the progress of repairs and inspections. A roller coaster of Fury 325’s stature holds significant importance not only for its thrilling experience but also as a cornerstone of the park’s attractions, making its swift return a priority for the park management.
