In a devastating incident that has shocked the local community, six-year-old Killian Gonzales lost his life after being struck by a falling log while playing at Little Squalicum Beach in Bellingham, Washington. The tragic event occurred at around 6 p.m. on July 8, when Killian was reportedly playing around a driftwood fort, unaware of the danger that lay overhead.

According to a statement from the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office, the young boy was not breathing after the log hit him, suffering a critical head injury. First responders provided immediate assistance, administering CPR at the scene before he was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Tragically, despite medical efforts, the boy succumbed to his injuries four days later, on July 12.
His mother, Sonja McCartney, recounted the harrowing moments of the incident, stating that Killian noticed the log falling and attempted to flee but was struck before he could escape. “We’re living through unimaginable grief,” McCartney wrote on a GoFundMe page set up to support the family during this difficult time. “Killian was such a bright light. He had this infectious, deep belly laugh that made everyone around him smile.”
Killian was at the beach with his sister and a babysitter, enjoying a day out that would end in tragedy. The local sheriff’s department expressed their sorrow, issuing a heartfelt statement that conveyed their condolences to the grieving family. “Each of us at the Sheriff’s Office joins our community in mourning the loss of this precious child,” they stated, acknowledging the brief but impactful life Killian led.
At his school, Alderwood Elementary, Killian had just completed kindergarten. Principal Amy Berreth offered her condolences to the Gonzales-McCartney family in a message directed to the school community, emphasising the need for available resources to help children cope with grief during this painful period.
In a show of support, the GoFundMe campaign has raised over £65,000 as of July 16, reflecting the community’s desire to assist the family as they navigate this profound loss. McCartney expressed her gratitude to everyone who contributed, stating, “Thank you to everyone who has donated so we can take time to grieve and figure out how life works now.”
Killian’s death has raised concerns about safety at local beaches, as discussions around potential preventive measures may arise following the incident. While these conversations are still in their infancy, the focus remains on providing support to the family and remembering the joyful spirit of young Killian.
A vigil to honour Killian Gonzales is scheduled to take place on July 20 at Squalicum Creek Park, giving the community a chance to come together in remembrance of the beloved child. As family and friends prepare to gather in his memory, they aim to celebrate Killian’s love for the outdoors and the joy he brought to those around him.
In light of this tragic event, there is a collective call for kindness and compassion as the Gonzales-McCartney family copes with their loss. The memory of Killian will persist in the hearts of those who knew him, as they continue to support each other in their time of sorrow.
