Renowned fashion designer and restaurateur Humberto Leon is venturing into the world of interior design with a new collection of washable rugs tailored specifically for college students. In collaboration with Ruggable, Leon has introduced the Ruggable U line, which features an array of stylish and functional rugs priced between £99 and £399.

Humberto Leon, who previously held the position of creative director at Kenzo and co-founded the influential fashion label Opening Ceremony, has garnered attention for his innovative approach to design. His journey into interior design began in earnest in 2020 when he opened Chifa, a Chinese-Peruvian restaurant in Los Angeles. It was during this time that he realised the power of transforming spaces into narratives that resonate with patrons.
“For me, the atmosphere of a space can be just as impactful as clothing,” Leon explained in a recent interview. “Creating a room with a story is about personalisation, and your environment can reflect who you are.” This understanding of immersive design led Leon to further his exploration of breathable, stylish interior pieces.
In addition to Chifa, Leon has opened two other dining establishments: Monarch, inspired by Hong Kong cuisine, and Arroz & Fun, which is currently situated within Chifa. With a solid foundation in curating engaging spaces, Leon decided to apply his expertise to the realm of home décor, focusing particularly on the preferences of Generation Z.
This summer, Ruggable, known for its fashionable yet practical washable rugs, invited Leon to develop a new line aimed at students moving into university accommodations. The Ruggable U collection includes three unique styles—Regency, Varsity, and Stagecoach—each designed with versatility and creativity in mind.
Leon approached this collaboration with the same meticulousness he applies to his restaurant environments. “In designing my restaurants, I’ve always considered every detail, from the seating to the cutlery. Similarly, the rug is often the cornerstone of a space—it sets the tone,” he noted. “Different inspirations can lead to various patterns, and I wanted to explore that through these rugs.”
The Regency range showcases ornate designs featuring whimsical elements, such as hidden cherub motifs and playful animal prints. In contrast, the Varsity collection draws upon Leon’s memories of his time at Opening Ceremony, prominently featuring patterns reminiscent of the iconic varsity jacket. Additionally, Stagecoach reflects Leon’s recent involvement as the creative director for the global girl group KATSEYE, with bandana-inspired designs that offer a contemporary spin.
Leon’s experience as both a designer and a father has further shaped his understanding of youthful style. With 12-year-old twin daughters, he has witnessed firsthand the evolving tastes of younger generations. “I find it exciting to recognise and celebrate diverse tastes,” he remarked. “It’s vital to trust your instincts and preferences rather than conforming to the opinions of those around you.”
As the new academic year approaches, Leon hopes to inspire students to see their dormitories as an extension of themselves. “You can create a space that reflects who you are without breaking the bank,” he emphasised. “In my view, design isn’t about the price tag, but about crafting an environment that resonates personally with you.”
Leon encourages students to express their individuality through personal touches, such as posters and cherished memorabilia. “Adorning your space with items that bring you joy is incredibly rewarding. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” he said, highlighting the significance of self-expression during formative years.
The Ruggable U collection not only embodies Leon’s artistic vision but also addresses the functional needs of students seeking comfort and style in their living spaces. By blending creativity with practicality, this collaboration aims to elevate the concept of dorm décor, making it accessible and reflective of the vibrant personalities of today’s youth.
