In a chilling and tragic case that has shaken a community in Canterbury, Kent, a woman has been convicted of murdering her husband and burying his body in their own backyard. The victim, Jeremy Rickards, aged 65, was discovered in a duffle bag hidden in the garden of the home he shared with his wife, Maureen, 50, in June 2024. The Crown Prosecution Service revealed that Jeremy had been stabbed to death.

Jeremy and Maureen Rickards had been married for 27 years and lived together in a building with other tenants. Jeremy was last seen on June 7, 2024, and his death was estimated to have occurred between June 8-26, according to investigations conducted by the CPS. Disturbingly, a tenant reported hearing noises of something being dragged down the stairs at night following Jeremy’s disappearance, and witnessed Maureen in the backyard during that time.

During the trial at Maidstone Crown Court on March 13, Maureen Rickards was found guilty of her husband’s murder. The court heard testimony from a neighbour, Oksana Kandaurova, who mentioned smelling something unpleasant akin to “rubbish or an animal corpse” while tending to her garden on June 14, as reported by BBC News.

The prosecution detailed how Maureen attempted to cover up her heinous crime by using her husband’s bank cards to go shopping and purchasing cleaning supplies after his disappearance. She even went as far as impersonating Jeremy on Facebook, messaging their daughter that he had travelled to Saudi Arabia, and later suggesting he was contemplating suicide. This led to the daughter reporting him missing to the authorities, sparking an investigation.

Forensic evidence revealed a gruesome series of events, indicating that Jeremy’s body had initially been placed in a cupboard in the couple’s bedroom, with pools of blood found in and around the area. Subsequently, the body was wrapped in bin bags, then stuffed into a large canvas bag and concealed under grass cuttings in the garden. Maureen’s DNA was discovered on one of the bin bags that had encased Jeremy’s body, linking her directly to the crime scene.

Post-mortem findings unveiled a history of domestic abuse inflicted upon the victim by his wife, with signs of strangulation weeks prior to his death and recent rib fractures indicating severe physical trauma. Witnesses attested to observing cuts and bruises on Jeremy’s face in the days leading up to the fatal incident. The CPS also presented a recording made by Maureen of her physically assaulting her husband, further corroborating the abuse he endured.

James Fisher, representing the CPS South East, condemned Maureen’s actions as those of a “callous abuser” who subjected Jeremy to unimaginable suffering before brutally ending his life. He highlighted Maureen’s elaborate web of deceit woven in an attempt to evade justice and expressed that she had never exhibited remorse for her heinous actions. Despite her efforts to conceal the truth, Maureen was ultimately held accountable for her husband’s murder in a court of law.
