In a disturbing incident that unfolded at Kettletown State Park in Southbury, Connecticut, a 23-year-old man has been charged with multiple serious offenses, including first-degree robbery and third-degree assault. Darius Moreno allegedly threatened two teenage girls with a knife and attempted to sexually assault them on 13 July.

Moreno faces an extensive list of charges that also includes two counts each of breach of peace, third-degree strangulation, unlawful restraint, and criminal attempt at sexual assault, along with additional counts of threatening. The incident reportedly occurred as the girls were enjoying the park, which has now become the site of a harrowing experience for them.
According to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s Environmental Conservation Police, the resilient teenagers managed to resist Moreno’s aggressive advances, ultimately fighting him off and seeking help from other individuals in the park. This act of bravery provided them with crucial aid in a frightening situation.
During Moreno’s arraignment at Connecticut Superior Court in Waterbury on 14 July, Waterbury State’s Attorney Maureen Platt detailed the alleged attack. She stated that Moreno attempted to drag the teens into the woods by their hair and threatened them verbally. “He told the girls he was going to (expletive) them and rob them,” reported Platt, highlighting the extreme nature of the threats made.
One of the girls, reportedly fearful for her life, curled into a fetal position during the encounter. However, one of the teenagers eventually found the courage to strike back, using a large rock to hit Moreno in the head. It appears this act, along with being pelted by additional rocks, was instrumental in her defence and played a vital role in the girls managing to escape.
Following his arrest, Moreno allegedly expressed remorse while in custody, asserting, “I’m sorry,” and disclosing that he had a fascination with “aggressive porn,” which he claimed contributed to his behaviour during the incident. These revelations have raised further questions about his mental state and motivations.
Currently, Moreno is being held on a substantial bond of $250,000 as the legal process unfolds. At this point, he has not entered a plea regarding the charges brought against him. The case is under close scrutiny, with concerns being raised about the safety and well-being of not only the victims but also the broader community.
Media representatives reached out to both the prosecutor’s office and Moreno’s defence attorney for statements; however, Waterbury State’s Attorney Maureen Platt declined to comment further on the case. Efforts to obtain a response from Moreno’s legal counsel were unsuccessful, leaving the public with unanswered questions as this unsettling story develops.
As investigations continue, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers lurking in otherwise peaceful environments. Local authorities are urging vigilance among park-goers and reaffirming their commitment to ensuring safety in recreational areas.
The bravery exhibited by the two teenagers in this intense confrontation is commendable, illustrating how resilience can triumph over fear in critical situations. The focus remains on the recovery of the victims and the resolution of legal proceedings against Moreno. Further updates on the case are anticipated as it progresses through the court system.
