A search operation is currently underway in San Francisco Bay for three individuals after a tragic incident involving a pontoon boat on 14 July 2026. The vessel, carrying family members gathered for a memorial service, capsized near Alcatraz Island, resulting in one confirmed fatality and the rescue of 16 others.

The distressing event unfolded around 3:37 p.m. local time when multiple emergency calls were made to report a boat in peril. The San Francisco Fire Department quickly mobilised, collaborating with various agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard. Their efforts were supported by private vessels already on the scene.
Upon arrival, rescue teams discovered a 49-foot cabin cruiser named Volare, which was reportedly travelling from Stockton. Initial reports suggested that steam emanating from the boat had been mistaken for smoke, prompting alarm from onlookers. The swift response saw a significant marine rescue operation initiated, successfully retrieving 16 individuals from the water. Among the rescued, three were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries but are now in stable condition.
Tragically, one passenger, who received life-saving measures after being pulled from the water, later succumbed to their injuries. In a heartbreaking revelation, officials confirmed that a dog also perished in the incident. San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen provided insights into the chaotic moments faced by rescuers, stating, “Some people were in the water. Some people were on the boat. Some people were just falling into the water,” during a press briefing.
Despite the efforts of emergency responders, three passengers remain unaccounted for as search operations continued into the night. Lt. Mariano Elias of the Coast Guard confirmed on Thursday that no victims had been located as of the latest updates. The search is employing advanced techniques, including thermal imaging, tide prediction, and predictive modelling, to enhance the efficiency of the operation.
The distressing incident occurred as the passengers, members of the same family, had gathered to scatter the ashes of a loved one in the bay, according to local sources. The emotional context of the gathering adds a further layer of tragedy to the day’s events.
Currently, the cause of the boat’s sinking, which took place approximately 600 yards from the historic Alcatraz site, remains unclear. During a press conference, Chief Crispen expressed uncertainty over whether the vessel capsized, although he reported that the top of the boat was visible when first responders arrived.
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie praised the first responders for their brave actions, stating, “Our first responders have been able to rescue 17 people from the water. Unfortunately, one person did not survive. But the work our first responders have done so far today has been nothing short of heroic, and they are showing incredible courage as their work continues.”
As the search continues, the focus remains on locating the missing passengers and providing support for the grieving family. Authorities are committed to utilising all available resources in a bid to bring closure to this tragic event, while also investigating the circumstances that led to the boat’s catastrophic failure.
Local residents have been invited to support the rescue efforts and offer assistance to those affected as this community grapples with the shock of such a devastating loss.
