Authorities have confirmed the heartbreaking news of a helicopter pilot’s death while combating the Gold Mountain Fire in Colorado. Nicholas Dale, a 56-year-old aviation specialist from Sooke, British Columbia, lost his life when the helicopter he was piloting crashed into the Silver Jack Reservoir on 12th July 2026.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:17 PM local time while Dale was engaged in wildfire suppression efforts. He was the only person aboard the K-MAX helicopter during the flight. Emergency services recovered both the helicopter and Dale’s body from the water on the same evening, promptly transferring his remains to the Gunnison County Coroner’s Office.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are currently investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the crash, although, as of now, no details have been released regarding a potential cause. Authorities are urging the public to remain patient while the investigation unfolds.

In a statement, Gov. Jared Polis expressed his sorrow over Dale’s passing, calling him a “heroic firefighting aviation pilot” who sacrificed his life while safeguarding the people of Colorado from the advancing Gold Mountain Fire. “Our state is deeply grateful for the brave firefighters, pilots, and first responders who put themselves in harm’s way to keep our communities safe,” he remarked. Polis extended his condolences to the family and friends of Dale, as well as to his colleagues in the firefighting community.
The Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) also released a heartfelt statement, offering their “deepest condolences” to those mourning Dale’s untimely death. The GCSO highlighted the immense sacrifice made by Dale and acknowledged the vital role he played in supporting local firefighting efforts.
In a gesture of respect, first responders held a procession to honour Dale on 13th July, the day following his death. Videos shared by the Grand Junction Fire Department (GJFD) depicted a solemn scene where police and fire personnel paid tribute, saluting as the hearse carrying Dale’s body passed by. This poignant moment underlined the camaraderie and respect shared within the firefighting community.
The Gold Mountain Fire, which has been burning in rugged terrain, has already consumed over 35,000 acres and is currently reported to be 13% contained. Firefighting crews continue to face significant challenges as they work diligently to manage the wildfire and protect surrounding communities from its devastating effects.
In their statement, the GJFD implored the public to keep Dale’s loved ones in their thoughts, as well as all those engaged in battling the Gold Mountain Fire. The ongoing efforts of hundreds of firefighters and emergency personnel highlight the bravery required to combat such dangerous situations.
This tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the risks taken by those who dedicate their lives to firefighting and firefighting support roles. The legacy of Nicholas Dale will live on, not only in the memories of those he served alongside but also in the hearts of the community he strived to protect. As investigations continue, many will reflect on his commitment and sacrifice in the face of peril.
