Anya Taylor-Joy has recently shed light on her character in the upcoming film “Dune: Part Three.” At the premiere of her latest series, “Lucky,” in Los Angeles on July 13, the actress responded to a comment made by her co-star Timothée Chalamet, who described her role as Alia Atreides as “terrifying.”

When asked about Chalamet’s remarks, Taylor-Joy expressed her satisfaction, stating, “If I scare Timmy, then we’re off to a good start.” She affirmed that she viewed Chalamet’s description of her character as a compliment rather than a criticism, further underlining her commitment to bringing a complex portrayal of Alia to life.

Chalamet, also 30, praised Taylor-Joy’s performance during a Global IMAX Fan Event, where he revealed glimpses of the film’s new trailer. He remarked, “She is unbelievable in this movie. Visually, it was breathtaking … she’s actually terrifying and amazing.” Chalamet noted that he had limited opportunities to work with Taylor-Joy in the previous installment, “Dune: Part Two,” where she made a brief appearance as a vision rather than in a substantial role.
In her brief cameo in the second film, Taylor-Joy portrayed the adult version of Alia, showcasing a vision experienced by Chalamet’s character, Paul Atreides, envisioning the future of his family’s legacy. However, her role in the upcoming third part promises to be far more significant, with the actress teasing a more complex character arc in a previous interview.
In March, while speaking with CinemaBlend, Taylor-Joy described Alia as experiencing a “very intense blessing curse situation.” She characterised her character as bearing the collective weight and wisdom of generations, stating, “She’s never in a singular conversation. It’s kind of all, everything, everywhere all at once.” A central theme for Alia is her profound love and devotion towards her brother Paul, which Taylor-Joy described as the only relationship that provides her character with a sense of grounding.
At the premiere of “Lucky,” in which Taylor-Joy stars as the con artist Luciana “Lucky” Armstrong, the actress elaborated on the challenges of portraying such a multifaceted character. “It was very interesting as a performer to play a character that I needed the audience to invest in while she was continuously lying,” she reflected. She recognised the delicate balance required to convey Lucky’s true self while also emphasising her deceptive nature.
“I felt like as a performer, the dial of every scene was about gauging how much I was letting the real Lucky shine through versus how much I wanted to impress with the fact that ‘Oh my God, she’s lying,’” Taylor-Joy explained. This duality is what she found particularly engaging as an actress, making the role both challenging and rewarding.
“Dune: Part Three” is set to hit cinemas on December 18, 2023, and has garnered significant anticipation from fans of the franchise. In contrast, “Lucky” is scheduled for release on Apple TV on July 15, providing audiences with a chance to see Taylor-Joy’s range as an actress.
As she prepares for the debut of both projects, Taylor-Joy continues to captivate audiences and critics alike with her performances. Her portrayal of Alia Atreides and her latest character in “Lucky” mark a significant point in her career, showcasing her ability to tackle complex roles that challenge the boundaries of conventional storytelling.
