In a startling incident, an Idaho father was severely injured following a rattlesnake attack while holidaying in California. Chris Howarth, visiting his parents in Lake Oroville, was bitten twice by the venomous snake while attending to a leaking pipeline in their garden.

The attack occurred when Howarth was with his family, which includes his wife, Jenny, and their three children. Initially, he thought one of the bites was relatively minor, but the other pierced deeper, affecting a vein. “My wife thought I was joking,” he recounted to local news outlet SFGATE, highlighting the disbelief that accompanied such a sudden and alarming event.

As the severity of Chris’s condition became apparent, his children reacted with fear, exclaiming that “Dad’s gonna die!” Jupiter quickly took action, driving him to Oroville Hospital, where he was admitted with significant symptoms: a numb tongue, swollen lymph nodes, and irregular breathing. According to Jenny, the snake’s venom entered Chris’s bloodstream almost immediately, severely affecting his health.

During his first six days in the intensive care unit (ICU), medical personnel administered a staggering 36 vials of anti-venom. Unfortunately, the hospital eventually ran out of the life-saving serum. Reflecting on this critical period, Chris shared that he believed he might not survive, stating, “I wrote some letters to my kids to make sure they had one last letter from Dad.” Such a poignant statement underscores the gravity of his situation.
Due to the limitations faced at Oroville Hospital, Howarth was airlifted to Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto for further treatment, where he received an additional 18 vials of a different antivenin. Thankfully, this treatment seemed to alleviate some of his symptoms, and after spending a total of 12 days split between both hospitals, Chris was eventually discharged and able to return home to Meridian, Idaho.
The ordeal had significant implications for Howarth’s family. Jenny had to take time off work to be with her husband during this traumatic event, and Chris remains unable to work, facing an indeterminate recovery period. The financial strain resulting from medical expenses, loss of income, and the need for ongoing specialised care prompted the establishment of a GoFundMe appeal, seeking support for the family.
The fundraising page states, “We are hoping to raise some money to help with the expenses incurred and from the weeks of missed work and expensive specialised care he will need to receive.” As the family navigates this challenging transition, they are ever grateful for the community’s support through this difficult journey.
Chris Howarth’s story serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictability of nature and the potentially life-threatening encounters that can occur, even in seemingly safe environments like a family garden. As he begins to heal, he reflects on the fragility of life and the love that binds him to his family, who stood by him throughout his ordeal.
