In a poignant narrative of love and resilience, Liv Shaw, a two-time cancer survivor from Manchester, has found a deep connection with her husband, Sam, also a survivor of cancer. Their shared experiences have fostered an understanding that few can relate to, and their story highlights the power of companionship in facing life’s most daunting challenges.

Liv’s journey with cancer began at a young age. Diagnosed with osteosarcoma at just 14, she faced the devastating reality of cancer head-on, which ultimately resulted in the amputation of her right leg above the knee. The emotional and physical toll of her diagnosis was significant, but Liv’s spirit remained unbroken. It was during her treatment that she first crossed paths with Sam, whom she met while volunteering at the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Both individuals were teenagers at the time, grappling with their own battles against cancer. Liv recalls meeting Sam at a conference hosted by the Teenage Cancer Trust, where his sense of humour and warmth immediately caught her attention. “He was funny then, and he still is,” she reflected, emphasising the lasting impression he left on her.
Several years after their initial meeting, Liv and Sam reconnected during another Teenage Cancer Trust event. This time, they were involved in discussions about body image post-treatment, which provided a platform for them to share their experiences. Their bond deepened during a charity fashion show, leading to their relationship blossoming. Liv fondly noted, “We started dating during that time and never looked back.”
However, Liv’s journey did not become any easier. After a another serious diagnosis while at university in 2020, she discovered a lump following the injury of a broken rib. This led to surgery to remove the tumour, although she was fortunate to escape additional treatment. It was this time that she was ultimately diagnosed with Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS), a genetic disorder that significantly raises the risk of developing various types of cancer.
Despite the challenges, Sam has been a steady source of support for Liv throughout her health struggles. “Sam has been an absolute rock throughout my second cancer diagnosis and subsequent LFS diagnosis,” Liv shared. He has an innate ability to find joy in life, which she credits as a key component of their relationship. “He knows how to lift my spirits and support me,” she added, reflecting on the strength they draw from each other.
The couple’s love story culminated in marriage in Las Vegas in 2025, a celebration of their enduring partnership and the light they find in one another. Yet, Liv remains acutely aware of the ongoing challenges posed by her condition. “I try to live life as normally as possible,” she said, but acknowledged the heavy weight of her cancer history, stating, “I’ve already been through two different cancers in my twenties.”
Liv is now an advocate for greater awareness and research into LFS, recognising the urgent need for advancements in treatment that could help prevent cancer before it develops. Her journey has shaped her understanding of the health landscape, specifically the need for early detection rather than just interim care. “There’s no cure for LFS,” she lamented, “and people like me urgently need more, and less invasive, ways to help reduce our cancer risk.”
Moreover, she has embraced her role as an advocate, finding purpose in sharing her story. “Using my voice to make a positive difference gives me strength,” she reflected, noting the hope that one day, there could be better options for those with LFS. Liv’s determination to bring attention to her condition is not just for her own benefit, but for others who share her experience.
As they move forward together, Liv and Sam Shaw exemplify the strength found in love, laughter, and resilience amid uncertainty. Their shared journey not only highlights the importance of emotional support in facing cancer but also underscores a call to action for more research and support for those with genetic conditions like Li-Fraumeni syndrome. Their story serves as a testament to the human spirit’s ability to find joy even in the midst of adversity.
