Hurtado, who hails from Puebla de Soto in Murcia, was exploring the vibrant streets of Seville with his family when he came across what he assumed was an abandoned painting. Describing his discovery, he recalled, “I saw some kids leave a painting lying in the street. I thought, what a cool frame, I didn’t really notice the painting, and I took it up to the hotel.” The alluring golden frame caught his eye more than the depicted scene, leading him to salvage the item without much thought about its artistic value.

Once back in Murcia, Hurtado aimed to learn more about the painting. He began utilising artificial intelligence to analyse the artwork, which showcased two boats against a serene beach horizon. To his surprise, the AI suggested that it might be an original piece by Joaquín Sorolla, the renowned Spanish painter known for his impressionist landscapes. Although Hurtado initially doubted the authenticity of the work, he sought further confirmation.

Thinking it prudent to consult experts, he reached out to an auction house to ascertain the painting’s origins. Upon reviewing the images he sent, the auction house quickly responded, affirming that the painting was indeed an authentic Sorolla. The artist, celebrated for his breathtaking depictions of light and nature, had dedicated the piece to a family, and it was valued at an astonishing €150,000, which translates to over $170,000.
However, the excitement of discovering this hidden treasure was soon tempered by a twist in the tale. A frantic search for the artwork was already underway, initiated by a local family who had unwittingly left the painting behind while loading their car for a vacation. It turned out that the family frequently brought the painting along on their trips but had forgotten it in the midst of their preparations.
According to reports, the painting was initially picked up by a group of children before being abandoned again, eventually coming into Hurtado’s possession. After realising their mistake, the family took to the streets, putting up posters in Seville’s city centre and reporting the incident as theft to the National Police.
As news of the stolen painting spread, complete with a photo resembling Hurtado’s find, he felt compelled to act. In a display of integrity, he contacted law enforcement immediately to clarify the situation. “I rang the police straight away and told them the news wasn’t true,” he explained. “I told them I hadn’t stolen it but just picked it up in the street.”
This act of honesty did not go unnoticed, as the grateful family offered Hurtado a token of appreciation for his integrity upon recovering their beloved artwork. The situation underlined the significance of community values and the impact of acting with goodwill, especially when faced with unexpected circumstances.
Hurtado’s encounter serves as a reminder of how unexpected moments during simple holidays can lead to remarkable experiences. It also raises intriguing questions about the ownership of art and the moral responsibilities surrounding found items. While finding something of significant value may tempt individuals to keep it, Hurtado’s actions reflect that honesty is ultimately the best policy.
This episode not only brought joy to the family reunited with their cherished painting but also showcased the power of ethical decisions in everyday life, bringing a sense of harmony back to Seville.
