Prince Archie, aged seven, and Princess Lilibet, age five, have recently made a special return to the United Kingdom, marking their first visit back since 2022. This trip was particularly poignant as it allowed the children to reunite with their grandfather, King Charles, at his Highgrove House estate in Gloucestershire.

The reunion took place on 10 July, as confirmed by a spokesperson. Accompanied by their parents, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the family enjoyed a private gathering hosted by the King and Queen Camilla. However, there were no official photographs or details released from this intimate family event, in line with the family’s preference for privacy.
Prince Harry has been in the UK for several charity engagements in London and Birmingham this week, although Meghan and the children were not present for much of his visit. Despite King Charles offering the family accommodation on royal property, security issues loomed large, imposing concerns about their safety outside of the estate.
Recent reports suggest that these security concerns hinged on the loss of the family’s taxpayer-funded police protection. Following their decision to step back from royal duties in 2020 and relocate to California, Prince Harry has been vocal about the challenges of bringing his family back to the UK. He has previously expressed reservations regarding their safety, especially after the family’s security arrangements were reviewed by the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (RAVEC), which has not produced any updates since Harry’s last assessment nearly seven years ago.
In a recent interview, the Duke of Sussex lamented the limitations this situation places on his family’s relationship with the UK. He stated, “The things that they’re going to miss is, well, everything… I think that it’s really quite sad that I won’t be able to show my children my homeland.”
Prince Archie was born in the UK and made his public debut shortly after his birth in May 2019. He has made a few public appearances since then but has largely remained out of the spotlight due to his parents’ decisions regarding their royal duties and the resulting privacy concerns. His sister, Princess Lilibet, was born in 2021, and her only previous visit to the UK occurred during the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022.
During that milestone trip, the family celebrated Lilibet’s first birthday at Frogmore Cottage. Photos from this occasion highlighted the Duchess of Sussex’s continued commitment to sharing moments of their children’s lives, albeit with a strong focus on safeguarding their privacy.
While Harry and Meghan have historically shared select pictures of their children, they typically obscure their faces to protect them from public scrutiny. A close friend of the family remarked that Harry’s reluctance to display his children publicly stems from a deep desire to shield them from potential threats, emphasising his commitment to ensuring they have a “normal” upbringing.
As the family continues to navigate life away from royal duties, the challenges they face regarding security and privacy remain at the forefront of their decisions. For now, the reunion with King Charles serves as a reminder of the family’s enduring ties to the monarchy, even amidst the complexities of their current lifestyle.
The Sussex family’s activities, especially those involving their children, are likely to attract interest and speculation. Nonetheless, they remain committed to prioritising their children’s safety and wellbeing above all else.
