A family outing at Knoebels Amusement Resort in Pennsylvania has taken a distressing turn, resulting in a lawsuit filed by a Californian couple. Elizabeth and Shane Burruss have brought a civil action against the renowned amusement park, following an incident in July 2024 that left Elizabeth suffering from significant injuries.

The couple’s complaint, lodged in a Pennsylvania District Court on July 1, alleges that Elizabeth sustained serious harm while navigating the exit of the Giant Wheel, Knoebels’ 110-foot-tall Ferris wheel. During the incident, which occurred on July 28, Elizabeth claims that her foot became ensnared on the angled loading platform as she attempted to disembark while holding her young child.

According to the allegations, the circumstances surrounding her exit were hazardous. The complaint details that Elizabeth had to step over the lip of the passenger pod and across a gap onto the adjacent platform. Unfortunately, this movement led to her foot becoming trapped, resulting in what she described as “severe and debilitating injuries.”
The lawsuit asserts that Knoebels Amusement Resort exhibited negligence by allegedly failing to create a safe exit environment. Specific claims include the lack of a level surface for exiting the Giant Wheel, the absence of assistance for patrons in her position, particularly as she was managing a small child, and the failure to adequately warn visitors of potential risks associated with disembarking.
Elizabeth’s injuries are extensive, reportedly encompassing damage to her left leg, knee, foot, and ankles. She also suffered contusions, abrasions, and nerve injuries, according to the lawsuit. Elizabeth’s attorney, Jeffrey Schmidt, indicated in comments to local media that her condition was severe, mentioning that she had broken both her tibia and fibula. Following surgery, she had metal rods and screws inserted to stabilise her leg and faced an arduous recovery period.
The recovery process has demanded considerable time from Elizabeth; reports suggest that she was unable to place weight on her injured leg for two months and has been in recovery for a total of eight months. These issues have understandably impacted not only her health but her family life as well.
In seeking damages, Elizabeth has requested amounts surpassing £75,000, alongside interest, court costs, and attorney fees. Simultaneously, her spouse, Shane, is pursuing a claim for loss of consortium, which relates to the emotional and supportive impacts stemming from his wife’s injuries. Shane is also seeking compensation of over £75,000 for the loss of companionship and support typically derived from a healthy relationship.
The Burruss family’s experience at Knoebels highlights potential safety oversights at amusement parks and raises questions about the responsibilities these venues hold in protecting their guests. The couple’s attorney noted the seriousness of the situation, and their endeavours reflect a broader concern regarding public safety during recreational activities.
As the case unfolds, Knoebels Amusement Resort has been approached for comment. The outcome of this legal action could hold implications for the park and raise awareness regarding the importance of safety protocols in amusement parks across the country.
The Burruss case underscores a critical discourse on amusement park safety, particularly for families who frequent such facilities. As they move forward with their lawsuit, the focus remains on ensuring that attractions adhere to the highest safety standards to protect their visitors.
Updates regarding the case will likely be monitored closely, as it not only affects the Burruss family but potentially sets a precedent for similar situations in the future. The pursuit of justice in this instance reflects the challenges faced by injured patrons and the intricate nature of liability within the amusement park industry.
