Cmdr. Edwards, who hailed from Oakland, Oregon, was the commanding officer of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 5 and had been at the helm since July 2025. His extensive flight experience included more than 2,000 hours in various aircraft, including the SH-60F, HH-60H, and MH-60S helicopter airframes. His contributions during his military career earned him several commendations, among them the Defense Meritorious Service Medal and multiple Navy and Marine Corps medals.

In response to the incident, Rear Adm. Todd Cimicata, the commander of Carrier Strike Group 10, extended heartfelt condolences to Edwards’ family. “The thoughts and prayers of every member of the Carrier Strike Group 10 team are with the Edwards family,” Cimicata expressed in a statement released by the Navy. He reiterated the importance of camaraderie even while being far from home and emphasised the enduring legacy of Cmdr. Edwards.

According to officials, three of the four crew members aboard the helicopter at the time of the crash were successfully recovered and reported to be in stable condition. At this stage, investigators have confirmed there was no indication that the helicopter’s emergency was related to hostile action, but an investigation into the exact cause of the incident is ongoing. The tragic event occurred around 3:30 am ET, leading to deep mourning within the Navy community.
Edwards’ widow, Rebecca, shared her grief and pride in her husband’s legacy, describing him as a devoted leader who led with compassion and integrity. “Gabe dedicated his life to serving his country with honour, courage, and commitment,” she noted, emphasising his role as a loving father and a cherished husband. She further expressed gratitude towards the personnel involved in the search and rescue efforts, recognising their relentless determination and skill amid challenging circumstances.
In a poignant statement, Rebecca requested privacy as her family begins to heal from this heartbreaking loss. She reflected on the joy and purpose that characterised Cmdr. Edwards’ life, both in his military career and his commitment to his family. “We find comfort in knowing that Gabe lived a life of extraordinary purpose, devoted to his country, his squadron, and above all, the family he loved so completely,” she said.
With the news of his passing, Cmdr. Edwards is remembered not only for his bravery and leadership in the field but also for the profound impact he had on those who served alongside him. The Navy community and the country at large continue to honour his service and the sacrifices made by military families.
As investigations proceed and reports emerge regarding the circumstances surrounding the helicopter crash, there is a collective mourning for Cmdr.
