A mother in Indiana is facing serious allegations after reportedly leaving her two young children, aged 1 and 1 week, at home alone while she went to a bar to drink. The incident came to light when police found the children covered in feces, with the newborn showing signs of malnutrition.
The woman, identified as Sandra Henriquez, 32, was discovered by officers in the early hours of Wednesday, March 12, following reports of her vehicle hitting a pole. After the collision, Henriquez was taken into custody and conveyed to the hospital before being transferred to jail. Authorities noted that she had multiple opportunities to inform them about her children but chose not to.
Later that day, the Muncie Police Department responded to a call reporting two babies crying and locked inside Henriquez’s residence. Upon forcing entry, officers found both children covered in feces, with the newborn showing signs of distress. The infant, in particular, was described as being in urgent need of care and was rushed to the hospital alongside the older child.
Reports indicate that the newborn weighed less than at birth and displayed signs of malnutrition. Despite this, the 1-year-old was said to be in good health except for needing a diaper change. Henriquez allegedly confessed to leaving home after midnight to visit a liquor store before ending up at a local sports bar, where she consumed a six-pack of beer.
Based on her admission, authorities believe the children were left unattended for 14 hours, during which time they discovered open alcohol containers and a neglected dog in Henriquez’s home. The mother now faces multiple charges related to neglect and abandonment, with a bond set at $42,500.
Henriquez has been charged with neglect of dependent resulting in serious bodily injury, neglect of dependent abandonment, neglect of dependent (two counts), and obstruction of justice. The gravity of the situation has prompted a swift response from law enforcement, with investigations ongoing.
