In a heartfelt recount of his life as a young father, Chaz McNelis has opened up about his journey raising his son, Grayson, affectionately known as “Baby G.” At just 16 months old, Baby G is already developing a fondness for baseball, much to the delight of his father, who is also navigating the challenges of being a student-athlete.

Now 20 years old, McNelis, an outfielder, has embraced fatherhood while balancing his studies and a demanding collegiate baseball career. His journey began while he was studying at the College of Southern Nevada, where Baby G was born. Following this, he transferred to the University of Arizona, where he gained notoriety for sharing charming videos of his son engaging with his teammates. As McNelis prepares to move to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, he expresses excitement about this new chapter for both himself and Baby G.

“Most of the guys going to UNLV are familiar faces since we’ve played against each other in high school,” McNelis shared. He also highlighted the importance of the coaching staff at UNLV, who has been a consistent presence throughout his journey, having previously worked at CSN during his early days as a father. Their familiarity has created a sense of trust as he embarks on this new opportunity.
Closer proximity to Baby G’s mother is another advantage of his move to Las Vegas. McNelis explained their co-parenting arrangement, which involves splitting the week between them. “We usually alternate at the start of the week, and then we take turns,” he said. The couple also makes an effort to engage in family activities, focusing on enriching Baby G’s experiences, such as trips to the playground and aquarium.
Despite his young age, Baby G has already begun to show an inclination towards baseball. McNelis finds it remarkable how the little boy has taken to the sport, saying, “His favourite thing to do is baseball. He’ll sleep with the bat and wake up mentioning balls.” The proud father shared that Baby G is developing rapidly, starting to babble and express himself more every day.
Reflecting on his own growth as a parent, McNelis admitted he never fully understood how quickly toddlers learn until he became one himself. “Every week, it’s a new milestone,” he remarked, highlighting how his son’s ability to communicate and recognise those around him has evolved significantly in a short time. As Baby G grows, McNelis has become increasingly cognizant of how his actions and words impact his son.
The young father revealed that managing his time with Baby G has improved significantly. Their evening routine often sees them settling down between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m., waking early to share breakfast before Baby G takes a nap. McNelis uses this quiet time to focus on his gym workouts and baseball training while his mother is often present to assist with caring for Baby G.
When McNelis is home, the pair engages in various activities, from playing baseball to attending swimming lessons. “Baby G is already showing interest in the sport; he hands me the bat and glove,” McNelis said. This shared passion helps bond them, even at such a young age. The support from his family strengthens McNelis as he reconciles his personal and professional responsibilities.
The most satisfying aspect of parenthood for McNelis is witnessing Baby G’s developing personality. “He is such a happy boy, always laughing and interacting with others,” he enthused. His goal as a father is simple: to instil happiness and a sense of gratitude in his son. “I just want him to enjoy life and be a good person,” he added.
Beyond affecting his relationship with Baby G, McNelis has discovered that his teammates also benefit from this family dynamic. “When Baby G is around, it uplifts everyone’s spirits,” he noted, revealing how his son has opened discussions among teammates about fatherhood and parenting. “It makes them excited about their futures and the possibility of becoming dads themselves,” McNelis concluded, illustrating how his experience is positively shaping the people around him.
As Chaz McNelis balances his obligations as a student, athlete, and father, he demonstrates resilience and determination, fostering a deep sense of joy in his life. Through shared experiences, both with Baby G and his teammates, McNelis navigates the complexities of young fatherhood while retaining focus on his goals within the world of college sports.
