A remarkable find at a thrift store has potentially changed the financial future of a young man from Oregon. Quinn Brown, a 19-year-old resident of Portland, purchased an unassuming Los Angeles Lakers jacket for just $3.07 at a local Goodwill, unaware that it bore the former ownership of legendary NBA player Wilt Chamberlain. The jacket, now authenticated, is set to fetch an impressive auction price estimated between £150,000 and £250,000.

Brown stumbled upon the jacket in January while browsing through Goodwill. The striking gold-and-purple garment caught his eye as it was held by another customer who ultimately passed up the opportunity to buy it. Seizing the moment, Brown quickly snatched it up and paid for it, suspecting it could be something special. In a move that would change the course of his life, he later shared a photograph of the jacket on Instagram, which led to a surprising connection with Sotheby’s.
Following his online post, Sotheby’s, the renowned auction house based in New York, reached out to Brown to express interest in the piece. After sending the jacket to be authenticated, the auction house confirmed that it had indeed been worn by Chamberlain during the 1972 NBA Finals – an exceptional discovery given that the jersey worn beneath the jacket was previously sold for a staggering $4.9 million.

Chamberlain, who is celebrated as one of the NBA’s all-time greats, passed away in 1999 at the age of 63. Known by his nickname “The Big Dipper,” he dominated the sport in the 1960s, achieving seven consecutive scoring titles and setting an astonishing average of 50.4 points per game in the 1961-62 season.
Sotheby’s has formally listed the jacket for auction, with bidding having commenced on 1 July and expected to close on 20 July. The auction has attracted significant attention, not only due to the historical significance of the piece but also because of Chamberlain’s storied legacy within basketball.
Brown, who initially gained an interest in thrifting during his high school years, has transformed what began as a hobby into a full-time business venture. Over the years, he has completed more than 10,000 sales, scouring thrift stores for items that could potentially hold value. His passion for finding unique pieces has now culminated in this extraordinary discovery, which he describes as a stroke of luck.

“I never anticipated finding something like this,” Brown admitted in an interview. “I was just doing this because I enjoy it, never expecting anything as valuable as this jacket.” His dedication to his craft has evidently paid off, leading to this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
With the prospect of a lucrative auction outcome, Brown has set his sights on an ambitious goal. He hopes to utilise the funds from the jacket’s sale to pave the way for an early retirement. The young entrepreneur’s fortune is a testament not only to his keen eye for valuable items but also to the serendipitous nature of thrift store shopping.
As the auction proceeds, the community watches closely, pondering the impact of such a significant item from basketball history. With each new bid, the excitement surrounding the jacket grows, underscoring the bridge between contemporary thrift culture and the storied past of the NBA. Whether Brown achieves his dreams of an early retirement remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: his discovery is a story that will resonate within sports and entrepreneurial circles alike for years to come.
