At the age of 92, Gilbert Martin, affectionately known as Mr. Gil, has been a welcoming presence at a Chick-fil-A in Oleander, North Carolina, for the past six years. His commitment to serving others has brought both him and his customers immense joy, demonstrating that age is no barrier to making a positive impact in one’s community.

Mr. Gil’s journey to Chick-fil-A began after a long tenure in the natural gas industry, followed by more than 12 years as a greeter at Sam’s Club. When his position at Sam’s Club concluded, he found himself at a crossroads. “After about two months, I was bored, so I put an application in [at Chick-fil-A],” he remarked in a recent interview. Now, he works five days a week, busily engaged in various roles from cleaning tables to restocking essential supplies and ensuring that food trays reach customers.

The restaurant isn’t just a job for Mr. Gil; it’s a platform for building meaningful connections. “Working at Chick-fil-A Oleander over the past six years has allowed me to meet so many wonderful Guests and Team Members,” he stated. These interactions have become an integral part of his life, reinforcing his belief that smiles and kind words can truly brighten someone’s day.
The ability to connect with patrons in their moments of need has also set Mr. Gil apart. Many who visit the restaurant may be grappling with difficult circumstances, such as appointments with healthcare professionals. Mr. Gil considers it his mission to provide encouragement and positivity during these challenging times. “The Lord gave me that,” he expressed when discussing his role as a source of support.
Mike Perdue, the owner-operator of the Chick-fil-A where Mr. Gil works, speaks highly of him. According to Perdue, Martin embodies the values of care and hospitality that the restaurant strives to offer its guests. “He brings joy to our Team Members and Guests through his genuine warmth, work ethic, and servant heart,” he noted. This sentiment is echoed by many customers who have developed a fondness for Mr. Gil; after a brief illness forced him to take time off work, numerous patrons inquired about his wellbeing.
The camaraderie and bond that Mr. Gil has forged with both employees and customers is a testament to his character. Perdue described him as “just a great person,” highlighting how rare it is to encounter individuals with such a positive disposition. Customers have taken notice, forming connections that extend beyond the restaurant’s walls.
Reflecting on his time at Chick-fil-A, Mr. Gil expressed gratitude for being active and involved in his community. He believes that it is never too late to pursue one’s passions and make a difference. “I hope my story reminds others that it’s never too late to keep doing what you love,” he shared in an interview. His attitude serves as an inspiration to others, demonstrating how living a life of service can be rewarding, regardless of age.
Looking towards the future, Mr. Gil has no intentions of stepping back from his role. “I don’t plan to go anywhere else,” he confirmed, showcasing his dedication to the job that has brought him happiness and a sense of purpose. His commitment to uplifting others through small acts of kindness continues to resonate within the community.
In a world that can sometimes feel disconnected, Gilbert Martin stands as a beacon of positivity and reminder of the profound effects that joy, service, and community can have on both individuals and society at large.
