A litter of 18 puppies, discovered abandoned on a dead-end street in Rahway, New Jersey, are now in the care of a local animal shelter. Common Sense for Animals (CSA), which is based in the state, announced the rescue on June 23, revealing that the puppies, approximately four months old, were found in a vulnerable state and require immediate attention and care.

The puppies were spotted on Saturday, June 20, near Jefferson Avenue. Concerned residents took action by gathering the animals and bringing them to a nearby home until animal control could intervene and transport the puppies to CSA. The shelter’s social media updates indicated that the puppies, which exhibit a mix of white, brown, and dark brown fur, require foster care due to their under-socialised nature.

In their Facebook post, CSA shared photographs of the puppies, showcasing their friendly demeanour despite their challenging circumstances. Some images capture a puppy looking up innocently at the camera while its siblings play in the background. Another photo highlights two of the pups in their pens, further emphasising their need for a nurturing environment.
Local news outlet WABC reported that witnesses observed a grey SUV in the vicinity shortly before the puppies were found. Consequently, authorities from the Rahway Police Department (RPD) are investigating the matter and attempting to identify the individuals responsible for abandoning the animals. As of yet, no arrests have been made regarding this suspected case of animal cruelty.
Following the discovery of the puppies, they were placed on a seven-day stray hold at CSA, which has now concluded. Since no one has come forward to reclaim the puppies, the shelter is preparing to make them available for adoption. However, it remains uncertain where they will ultimately be placed, as there are currently no case notes detailing their future adoption centre.
The RPD has provided reassurance that the puppies have received all necessary medical care and are reportedly in good health. CSA has indicated a strong demand for foster homes, stating that the puppies require fostering for a period ranging from two weeks to several months. The shelter described the puppies as “friendly and sweet” but noted their need for socialisation and basic training.
The shelter highlighted the puppies’ current lack of house training, explaining that they are just beginning their journey into a new life. “These puppies need a lot of love, time, and patience,” CSA conveyed, urging the public to consider fostering these animals to help acclimatise them to a home environment.
Once legal procedures regarding the case are resolved, the puppies will be made available for adoption. Nevertheless, it is unclear when this will occur, and the shelter is working diligently to ensure the puppies receive the attention they need in the meantime. CSA also reported that the puppies have received their initial vaccinations, with two more required before they can safely visit dog parks or similar areas.
The story of these abandoned puppies serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the critical work undertaken by animal shelters in times of crisis. Common Sense for Animals continues to seek foster caregivers capable of providing a stable environment for the puppies as they prepare for their eventual adoption into loving homes.
Anyone interested in fostering or adopting one of these animals can contact Common Sense for Animals directly, as the shelter encourages community members to step up and make a positive impact in the lives of these needy puppies.
