In a recent interview with Vulture, Lee reflected on the film adaptation of her previous work, *The Idea of You*, which features Anne Hathaway in the lead role. She expressed her disappointment regarding certain changes made to the character Solène Marchand, stating that the film “minimized her in every way.” Originally depicted as an international art gallerist, the character was altered to portray a “California everymom” with limited depth. This shift, according to Lee, detracted from the character’s original essence, highlighting the challenges female characters often face in adaptations.

Furthermore, the film diverges significantly from the book’s conclusion. In the novel, Solène opts to end her relationship with Hayes, the lead singer of the fictitious boy band August Moon, while the film portrays a more conventional romantic resolution. Lee stated that Solène’s decision was pivotal, revealing that she loved, not Hayes himself, but merely “the idea” of him. Through this narrative choice, Lee emphasises the complexities of love and the sometimes painful realisations that accompany it.

In her forthcoming novel, *Crash Into Me*, Lee ventures deeper into the exploration of human relationships and personal struggles. The story’s protagonist, Cecilia Chen, navigates life as the wife of a renowned French director, raising children in what the author describes as “a toxic playground of privilege and power” in Los Angeles. A chance encounter following a car accident forces Cecilia to confront her past, including a previous relationship and her identity within this privileged sphere.
Lee has been developing Cecilia’s story for over a decade, taking intermittent breaks from her writing. In 2019, she dedicated herself to refining her narrative, aiming to craft a “seductive story” that encapsulates the complexities of modern womanhood. “I wanted to write stories for us because I knew what my friends who were in their 40s were doing, and how full their lives were,” she explained. Lee highlights the often-untold stories of women who continue to lead rich, vibrant lives after significant life changes like marriage and motherhood.
The author has previously shared insights into her aspiration to portray women in ways that reflect their true experiences and complexities. Lee stated, “The opportunity to write women characters who contain multitudes will always appeal to me.” In *Crash Into Me*, readers can expect to engage with deep character studies that investigate the multifaceted nature of female existence.
Moreover, Lee has highlighted her enjoyment in writing about love, romance, and the inherent pain that can accompany such emotions. She believes that honesty in narratives surrounding relationships can resonate deeply with readers. By depicting authentic experiences, she hopes to create characters that are relatable and reflective of real-life struggles.
*Crash Into Me* is scheduled for publication on 7 July and is available for pre-order. As Lee prepares to unveil her latest work, she remains committed to amplifying female voices in literature, offering readers a chance to experience stories that may reflect their own lives and challenges in new and profound ways. With a keen understanding of the complexities that women face, Lee continues to carve a niche within modern storytelling that invites empathy and connection.
