In a disturbing discovery, Spanish law enforcement apprehended two individuals following the unearthing of almost 1,000 marijuana plants on an illegal cannabis farm in the province of Ciudad Real. The site, located in the municipality of Malagón, also revealed a shocking environment for numerous animals, many of which were found in what authorities described as ‘horrific’ conditions.

On July 2, a video released by Spain’s National Police showcased the chaotic scene during a raid that occurred on June 30. Initially, police were executing a routine investigation into the cultivation of marijuana when they stumbled upon the grim reality of the site, which presented an unexpected and distressing tableau.

During their search, officers dismantled six indoor marijuana growing operations loaded with nearly a thousand cannabis plants. However, the heinous conditions for the animals quickly became the focus of the investigation. The police discovered three wallabies, two roe deer, three calves, and an alarming number of dogs—14 in total—living amongst filth and neglect.

Perhaps equally shocking was the presence of decomposing carcasses scattered throughout the property, with authorities reporting that hundreds of chickens had been discarded in bags, likely fed to the dogs. The animals, including the wallabies and deer, were being kept in a garden used by the suspects and their young family, adding another layer of complexity to the case.
Following their rescue, the three wallabies—a species native to Australia—were placed in a zoo in Toledo province, where they are now receiving proper care and treatment after enduring a distressing ordeal. The animals’ recovery is ongoing as veterinarians work to rehabilitate them.
Alongside the cultivation of cannabis, police unearthed an underground marijuana production facility that had been illegally tapped into the electrical grid. This uncovered a range of illegal activities that went beyond mere drug cultivation.
Authorities took action by arresting two individuals linked to the marijuana operation. The suspects now face a multitude of charges, including drug trafficking, animal cruelty, and public health violations, among other serious allegations. The ongoing investigation aims to bring to justice those responsible for this egregious case of animal abuse and illegal drug activity.
The response from local animal welfare organisations and the public has been overwhelmingly supportive of the police’s actions. Many have expressed horror over the conditions experienced by the animals and have called for stricter regulations surrounding both wildlife conservation and drug cultivation.
As the investigation continues, it underscores the vital need for animal protection laws, particularly in cases where illicit activities intersect with the wellbeing of animals. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the responsibilities that come with animal caretaking, and the dire consequences when those responsibilities are neglected.
