Donald Trump recently made headlines during a speech at the dedication ceremony of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in North Dakota. The former president, known for his often controversial remarks, playfully suggested that he might award himself and his two sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, the Congressional Medal of Honor.

The comments were made on July 1, at the picturesque Burning Hills Amphitheatre in Medora, where Trump was addressing an audience gathered to celebrate the opening of the library dedicated to the legacy of Theodore Roosevelt. During his speech, Trump drew attention to the achievements of military figures, referencing General Douglas MacArthur and his father, Arthur MacArthur Jr., who were esteemed recipients of the nation’s highest military honour. He also mentioned Theodore Roosevelt and his son, who both received the medal.

In a humorous twist, Trump looked towards his sons in attendance and quipped about including his family in the prestigious ranks of Medal of Honor recipients. “Now, as I see my two beautiful sons sitting there, I think I’m going to give one to myself, one to them, and we’ll have a threesome,” he joked, eliciting laughter from the crowd. He further jested that he might award his sons medals “for their genius at hunting” and suggested a medal for himself “for taking on Russia, Russia, Russia, or something”.

Despite his light-hearted tone, Trump quickly clarified that his comments were intended as jest. “No, I’m only kidding,” he elaborated, cautioning the audience about the potential for misunderstanding. “I learned early on, don’t be sarcastic in politics,” he added, recognising the media attention that tends to follow his remarks.
Earlier in the day, Trump participated in a private ceremony at the library where he donated Theodore Roosevelt’s actual Medal of Honor to the institution’s collection. The medal had previously been displayed in the White House’s Roosevelt Room. While there, Trump expressed a playful desire to award himself the same honour. “There are very few people who have them. I want to give one to myself, but they tell me I’m not allowed to,” he stated. He then turned to his sons, jokingly asking, “What have I done, where I deserve it?” and feigning disappointment at their inability to provide an answer.
The Congressional Medal of Honor holds significant esteem as the highest award for military bravery in the United States. It is awarded to members of the armed forces who demonstrate extraordinary acts of heroism above and beyond the call of duty during combat or qualifying military operations. The process for receiving this distinguished medal is extensive, requiring detailed accounts of the acts of bravery, regardless of their emotional complexities.
During his trip to the library, Trump explored various exhibits, including those dedicated to Roosevelt’s journals and artefacts from his life. He also encountered an interactive display featuring an AI-powered replica of Theodore Roosevelt. Accompanied by North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum and the library’s executive director, Robbie Lauf, Trump reflected on Roosevelt’s impactful legacy, stating, “He was a great man and it’s a great place,” before revealing to those present that he was “getting some ideas” for his own upcoming presidential library.
Plans for Trump’s proposed library, released earlier this year, include a modern skyscraper located in Miami. The ambitious design features a lobby that will showcase a Boeing 747, gifted to him by Qatar, alongside an auditorium adorned with a towering golden statue of the former president.
The event in North Dakota illustrates the continuing influence of Theodore Roosevelt in American political discourse, as well as Trump’s tendency to engage in provocative humour. Whether met with cheers or criticism, Trump’s remarks seemed designed to resonate with his base while highlighting themes of familial pride and honour, even if done with a touch of irreverence.
