The newly released Netflix docuseries, ‘Worst Neighbor Ever’, explores harrowing true crime tales of neighbourly disputes that escalated into acts of violence and betrayal. Comprising four distinct episodes, the series documents real-life incidents that have not only devastated the lives of those directly involved but have also reverberated throughout their communities.

The first episode introduces viewers to Shawna and David Scott, a couple residing in the quiet town of Mount Sterling, Kentucky. Their lives took a sinister turn with the arrival of Frances Zaayer, a former family friend, who ultimately moved next door. Initially welcomed into their home following her divorce, the relationship soured rapidly. After a series of conflicts, Shawna asked Zaayer to leave. In retaliation, Zaayer moved into an adjacent property, relentlessly harassing the Scotts, further escalating tensions.
The situation escalated dramatically in May 2018 when Zaayer entered the couple’s home and shot Shawna in the face and David in the heart. While Shawna survived her injuries, David, a respected deputy jailer, tragically lost his life. Zaayer was apprehended and charged with murder and other serious offences. In 2022, she pleaded guilty and received a 35-year prison sentence, with an expected release date in 2046.
The second episode transports viewers to Indianapolis, Indiana, where Monserrate “Moncy” Shirley’s life turned dark after she began a tumultuous relationship with Mark Leonard. Old friends observed a change in her behaviour, especially after Leonard, who was under an ankle monitor, moved in with her. On 10 November 2012, a catastrophic explosion rocked their home, claiming the lives of their neighbours, Dion and Jennifer Longworth.
Both Shirley and Leonard initially denied any wrongdoing, but investigators uncovered evidence that suggested they had deliberately caused the blast as part of an insurance fraud scheme. After a thorough investigation, Shirley entered a plea deal in 2015, leading to her conviction on conspiracy charges and a lengthy prison sentence. Leonard received even harsher punishment, with two life sentences plus additional years for his role in the tragedy.
The third harrowing tale unfolds in East Oakland, California, where Miles Armstead and his family found themselves terrorised by their former neighbour, Jamal “JT” Thomas. Initially friends, the relationship deteriorated following the eviction of Thomas’s family. Thomas began harassing the Armsteads, ultimately escalating to threats and violence. Despite the Armsteads’ repeated calls for police intervention, Thomas’s harassment continued unabated.
In a devastating turn of events, Miles was fatally shot by Thomas in May 2020 while tending to his garden. Thomas was subsequently arrested, charged with first-degree murder, and is now serving a life sentence in High Desert State Prison. His release is tentatively scheduled for 2035.
The final episode of the series highlights the disturbing fraud scheme of Caroline Herrling, who preyed upon vulnerable individuals in her neighbourhood. In 2020, she allegedly broke into the home of Charles Wilding in Sherman Oaks, California, and, following his mysterious death, concocted a plan to claim his assets.
Compounding her deceit, Herrling moved Wilding’s body around, forging documents to pose as his legal representative. It wasn’t until concerned neighbours alerted authorities that Herrling’s crime spree was uncovered. In early 2023, she admitted her guilt regarding wire fraud, a move that resulted in a 20-year prison sentence and a hefty restitution order.
The stories within ‘Worst Neighbor Ever’ shed light on the darker aspects of human relationships, emphasising how seemingly ordinary individuals can become embroiled in tragic circumstances. Each episode serves as a stark reminder of the real-life consequences stemming from neighbourly disputes, highlighting the fragility of community trust.
As audiences engage with these profound narratives, the documentary not only entertains but also compels reflection on the nature of trust, the potential for violence in familiar surroundings, and the dire outcomes of unresolved conflicts. By chronicling these cautionary tales, ‘Worst Neighbor Ever’ underscores the complexities of human behaviour and the importance of community vigilance. The series leaves viewers questioning the boundaries between neighbourliness and the potential for betrayal lurking just next door.
