Utz Quality Foods, LLC has initiated a voluntary recall of several limited-edition varieties of its Zapp’s and Dirty brand potato chips due to concerns regarding potential Salmonella contamination in one of the seasoning ingredients. This decision has now escalated into a Class 1 recall as designated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), highlighting a significant health risk associated with the consumption of these products.

The FDA’s Class 1 designation, issued on June 24, suggests that there is a “reasonable probability” that exposure to the recalled products may lead to serious health consequences or even fatalities. This classification has raised alarms, especially as Salmonella can lead to severe infections, particularly in vulnerable groups such as young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.
The specific products included in this recall are as follows: 1.5-ounce Zapp’s Bayou Blackened Ranch Kettle Chips, 2.5-ounce and 8-ounce Zapp’s Brand Bayou Blackened Ranch Potato Chips, 1.5-ounce and 2-ounce Dirty Brand Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips, 2-ounce Dirty Maui Onion Chips, 1.5-ounce and 8-ounce Zapp’s Big Cheezy Potato Chips, and 2-ounce Dirty Sour Cream and Onion Potato Chips. All items are packaged in plastic bags.

The initial recall notice was published on April 28 and was later announced through a press release on May 4. The motivation for this recall stemmed from information regarding a seasoning containing dry milk powder sourced from California Dairies, Inc. A third-party supplier raised concerns that this ingredient might be contaminated with Salmonella.
Utz Quality Foods stated that it acted “out of an abundance of caution” despite the affected seasoning batches testing negative for Salmonella prior to their use. The company confirmed that, as of yet, it has not received any reports of illnesses associated with the recalled products. Nonetheless, it decided to proceed with the recall following the supplier’s alert regarding potential contamination.
In responding to inquiries from the media, a representative from Utz reiterated that no other products manufactured by the company are implicated in this issue. Consumers currently in possession of the affected products are strongly advised to discard them to ensure their safety.
Utz Quality Foods has established a customer service line for individuals seeking further information or wishing to request refunds. Consumers can reach the Utz Customer Care team by calling 1-877-423-0149 on weekdays between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. ET.
The company is coordinating closely with the FDA throughout the recall process, underlining its commitment to consumer safety. As this situation develops, Utz Quality Foods continues to keep the public informed about any necessary updates.
To summarise, while the immediate health risks associated with these specific potato chips are deemed serious, the proactive steps taken by Utz Quality Foods illustrate their dedication to addressing potential hazards swiftly. Consumers are encouraged to remain vigilant and consult the full list of affected products to ensure their safety.
