A Massachusetts family is urgently seeking assistance to repatriate their father, who has fallen gravely ill following a mysterious insect bite while on holiday in Fiji. Scott “Scooter” Winslow, a resident of Holbrook, had embarked on what was meant to be a memorable three-month trip to the South Pacific when his health took a severe turn for the worse.

Initially, Winslow noticed what appeared to be a simple bug bite. However, as time went on, his condition deteriorated rapidly. His daughter, Lisa Babbin, explained, “By the time they got to a doctor, he was so sick.” The family reported that Winslow became too unwell to walk, struggling to leave the boat he was travelling on.
Currently, Winslow is receiving care in a Fijian hospital, where he is reliant on a ventilator due to septic shock, organ failure, and a threatening infection. The hospital’s resources are limited, leading the family to understand that an air ambulance evacuation back to the United States is imperative. His daughter noted the urgency of the situation, saying, “Every hour counts for my father.”
The initial bite, which seemed inconsequential, has now transformed into a critical health crisis. A GoFundMe campaign initiated by the family states, “What initially appeared to be a simple insect bite quickly became something far more serious.” The exact cause of Winslow’s condition remains uncertain, as medical professionals are investigating whether it stems from the bug bite itself, an infected wound, or an undisclosed underlying condition.
His family has remained by his side throughout this harrowing ordeal. As time progressed, his condition worsened, prompting his wife, Claire, to be informed that they should “prepare for the worst.” The situation has escalated to the point where his kidneys are reportedly functioning at a dangerously low level, with the infection having extended to his gallbladder and lungs.
In a bid to secure his transfer back to the US, the family has identified a Massachusetts hospital willing to accept Winslow for treatment. However, they are confronted with the staggering cost of the mediflight, which is estimated at around $250,000. Tragically, Winslow does not possess medical insurance, further complicating the family’s efforts to obtain timely care for him.
“Anyone who knows Scott knows the kind of man he is—hardworking, loyal, generous, and always willing to lend a hand,” the GoFundMe page states. It reflects on Winslow’s character and the many lives he has touched throughout his life. The funds raised through the campaign are intended to alleviate the financial burden of his medical evacuation and treatment, allowing the family to focus on his recovery.
As of early July, supporters have generously contributed over £28,000 towards the target of £40,000 set on GoFundMe. The outpouring of support illustrates the community’s commitment to helping Winslow and his family during this distressing time.
In addition to Lisa, Winslow is also a father to two other children, Dave and Suzie. The family has sought assistance from local authorities in navigating the complexities of securing an emergency government loan for the medical evacuation. A representative from Congressman Stephen Lynch’s office confirmed they are in communication with the Winslow family and are liaising with the U.S. embassy in Fiji to provide necessary support.
The Willett family’s plight underscores the unpredictable nature of travel and the need for robust contingency plans in place when embarking on international holidays. With the clock ticking, the family remains hopeful that they can bring their beloved father home soon and secure the medical attention he desperately needs.
