Jodie Sweetin has shed light on why her former ‘Full House’ co-stars, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, chose not to reprise their iconic roles in the Netflix reboot, ‘Fuller House.’ Speaking on a recent episode of Taboo’s ‘Comics & Kicks,’ Sweetin expressed her disappointment at the duo’s decision, attributing it largely to their focus on their successful fashion career.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen became household names when they began portraying the beloved character Michelle Tanner on ‘Full House’ from a mere nine months old. The twins enjoyed a prolific acting career that spanned over two decades, during which they appeared in over 30 films. Despite their immense success, they made the conscious choice to step away from the acting limelight in favour of their luxury fashion label, The Row, which they founded in 2005.

In the first episode of ‘Fuller House,’ the absence of Michelle Tanner was cleverly addressed. Sweetin recalled a moment when the characters, fully aware of the Olsens’ absence, looked into the camera. “We were all standing in the kitchen talking about how great it was to be together again, and then we remarked, ‘if only Michelle were here’—suggesting she was busy running her fashion empire in New York,” she recounted. This creative nod to the twins’ real-life pursuits drew laughter from the cast and audience alike.

Sweetin, who played the role of Stephanie Tanner from 1987 to 1995, elaborated on her understanding of the twins’ decision. She highlighted that the Olsens had been in the public eye since childhood and likely had a different perspective on fame and acting. “People often ask if they hated their time on the show, and I assure them that’s simply not the case. They’re all on good terms with us,” Sweetin clarified, noting that the twins were only eight years old when ‘Full House’ concluded.
While Sweetin fondly remembers their days together on set, she acknowledges that the Olsens might not share the same sentiments. “They’ve had a different relationship with being on set. Although they might not remember their early years performing, I do, and I think they found their true passion in fashion instead,” she explained.
As creatives in the fashion industry, Mary-Kate serves as the creative director, whereas Ashley holds the position of CEO at The Row. Under their leadership, the brand has blossomed into a renowned luxury label, further solidifying their departure from the world of acting. This transition evidently allowed them to craft a life away from the persistent scrutiny of the public eye.
Sweetin empathised with their choice, stating, “Their empire has flourished, and understandably, they want to avoid the spotlight.” She noted that the twins have experienced significant levels of public intrusion throughout their careers, likely influencing their decision to focus on fashion rather than returning to acting.
Despite the Olsens’ choice not to participate in ‘Fuller House’, Sweetin acknowledged the playful spirit of their approach by incorporating a nod to Michelle’s absence. “We figured we could still throw in a little humour about it, even if they weren’t there. It was all meant in good fun,” she concluded.
The story of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen serves as a reminder of the diverse paths celebrities may choose post-fame. For the twins, the shift from child stars to successful businesswomen illustrates their capability to carve out identities beyond the realm of Hollywood, focusing on what resonates with them personally. While disappointed fans may miss the Olsens in the reboot, their evolution offers a fascinating insight into the lives of those who grow up under the scrutiny of the spotlight.
