In a heartwarming display of support for young talent, Dwayne Johnson made a surprise appearance at the British Theatre Academy’s performance during the Moana Pop-Up Experience in London on 30 June 2026. The event celebrated the upcoming live-action adaptation of Disney’s beloved animated film, Moana, in which Johnson is set to reprise his role as Maui.
The moment unfolded as the young performers from the Academy were in the midst of their rendition of “You’re Welcome,” the iconic song originally sung by Johnson in the 2016 animated feature. To the astonishment of both the audience and performers, the Hollywood superstar joined them on stage, microphone in hand. A delightful video released from the event captures the moment, showcasing Johnson singing along with the students, who provided lively choreography and backing vocals.

“The past 48 hours has been an absolute rollercoaster! Like a surprise gust of wind that is both refreshing but a little scary,” reflected Corin Pinky Miller, Vice Principal of the British Theatre Academy. In a social media post, she expressed her gratitude for the unique opportunity, stating, “Today our members performed with Dwayne Johnson, and it was as surreal as it sounds! What a kind and generous man.” Miller encapsulated the day’s significance, declaring, “A day our kids will NEVER forget.”
The Academy’s gratitude extended to Disney for facilitating the event and offering invaluable support throughout the process. Miller highlighted the efforts of the choreographers who helped students learn authentic Samoan dance moves, further enriching their performance experience. “Thank you Disney for making this one happen and looking after us!” she added.

Matthew Chandler, Chief Executive of the British Theatre Academy, shared his enthusiasm for the event in an email to PEOPLE. He conveyed that the students were “incredibly excited” to perform alongside Johnson and underscored the importance of Johnson’s commitment to supporting young individuals in the arts. “Given everything The British Theatre Academy stands for, our hearts were truly full to have been part of such an incredible opportunity,” Chandler noted.
The Moana Pop-Up Experience took place at Potters Fields Park and transformed the venue into a vibrant celebration of Pacific culture and storytelling. Spanning over 10,000 square feet, the free event featured a range of attractions, including a giant recreation of Maui’s magical hook, dance performances from the London School of Hula and Ori, photo opportunities, a pig petting farm, lei-making workshops, karaoke, and various game stations. To top it off, visitors could indulge in Pacific-inspired food and beverages.
As excitement builds for the live-action adaptation of Moana, the film features newcomer Catherine Lagaʻaia in the lead role of Moana, alongside Johnson returning as Maui. Directed by Thomas Kail, the narrative follows the adventurous duo on a daring voyage across the ocean to discover what lies beyond the reef. Alongside Johnson and Lagaʻaia, the film boasts a talented cast, including Jemaine Clement as the voice of the giant crab Tamatoa, John Tui as Moana’s father Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as her mother Sina, and Rena Owen as her grandmother Gramma Tala. Auli‘i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the animated film, is returning as the executive producer.
With its theatrical release set for 10 July, the live-action adaptation of Moana promises to bring the spirit of the original story to new audiences while remaining a source of inspiration for young performers and artists. This extraordinary day at the pop-up experience exemplifies the kind of magical opportunities that continue to flourish in the world of theatre and film, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all those involved.
