Man in England Fined for Keeping Pet Alligator Named Cliff in His Yard

A British man has found himself in trouble after being fined for keeping a pet alligator named Cliff in his backyard. Ashley Betts, a resident of Rotherham, had been housing the 4-foot reptile in a tank at the back of his home for a year until authorities discovered it in July 2024. The 32-year-old Betts admitted that he was unaware of the requirement for a special license to keep exotic animals like Cliff. He pleaded guilty to violating the Dangerous Wild Animals Act at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, March 12, and was subsequently fined nearly $1,300.
The Dangerous Wild Animals Act in the UK, which covers alligators among other creatures, strictly prohibits individuals from keeping such dangerous wild animals without the necessary license granted by the local authority. As reported by BBC News, Cliff is currently residing in a temporary facility in a park in Liverpool as Betts aims to adhere to the licensing regulations to reclaim the alligator. Betts had housed Cliff in a designated outbuilding and tank, a setup that came to light when police visited his property for an unrelated matter. According to Sheffield Star, Betts mentioned that he obtained the alligator from a friend.
Fortunately for Betts, he was not charged with animal cruelty, and the court confirmed that there was no indication that Cliff was being mistreated or posed a danger to public safety. South Yorkshire Police and Sheffield Magistrates’ Court were approached for additional comments, but responses are pending. This incident follows a similar case earlier this year in Pennsylvania, where authorities seized a pet deer owned by a local woman. Tammy Shiery had been caring for the deer, named Baby, along with other community members since the animal was discovered as a fawn. Despite believing she had met all legal requirements, including vaccines, Shiery unknowingly violated Pennsylvania laws as Baby was not born in captivity.
