The world of “Legally Blonde” is back in the spotlight with a new prequel series titled “Elle,” now available on Prime Video. Nearly 25 years after the original film, audiences are once again introduced to the charming character of Elle Woods, as portrayed by Lexi Minetree, who steps into the role previously made famous by Reese Witherspoon.

Set in high school, “Elle” follows the titular character as she navigates her teen years in Seattle after her family moves from Los Angeles. This shift marks a significant departure from the vibrant college life depicted in the original movies. Despite the change, familiar faces and beloved elements from the “Legally Blonde” series make a much-anticipated return.

Lexi Minetree, a self-proclaimed fan of the original “Legally Blonde,” shared that she had watched the film approximately 150 times before landing this pivotal role. In a candid moment during an interview, she reminisced about the open audition process and how she felt overwhelmed when Witherspoon congratulated her on securing the part. Minetree’s commitment to honouring the character and its legacy is evident, particularly as she chose to wear the same pink Marc Jacobs dress that Witherspoon donned at the premiere of the first film in 2001.
In a recent appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” Witherspoon, who reprises her role as an executive producer for “Elle,” spoke glowingly of Minetree’s audition. She noted the countless videos they reviewed to find the right fit for the character and remarked that Minetree’s talent was immediately striking, saying it felt like a “lightning strike” when they saw her audition.
The series sheds light on Elle’s family, bringing back her parents, Eva and Wyatt Woods, with June Diane Raphael and Tom Everett Scott taking on these roles. Their depiction of Elle’s family interaction offers an engaging dynamic, showcasing a supportive mother-daughter relationship devoid of the competition often seen in similar narratives. Raphael expressed her enthusiasm for being part of a project that reflects this healthy familial bond.
The series also revisits Bruiser, Elle’s adorable chihuahua companion, who first stole hearts in “Legally Blonde.” In “Elle,” viewers will learn about Bruiser’s early days when young Elle receives the pup as a gift from her mother. The dog originally played by Moonie has now been replaced by a “baby Bruiser,” whose diva-like antics on set have charmed the cast, especially Minetree, who described the dog as exceptionally cute.
In a nod to the nostalgia of the original film, “Elle” brings back the favourite character of Wyatt Woods, portrayed by Tom Everett Scott, who shares a relatable story about securing his role amidst the pressure of impressing his daughter, who is a long-time fan of the franchise. Reflecting on the emotional significance of playing her father, Scott expressed joy in sharing this experience with his daughter during the premiere.
As “Elle” weaves the backstory of a beloved character while expanding upon the existing narrative universe of “Legally Blonde,” it strikes a balance between nostalgia and fresh storytelling. Minetree’s portrayal and the return of key characters make for a series that aims to capture both old fans and new viewers alike.
With all these elements combined, “Elle” promises to deliver a delightful blend of charm, warmth, and empowerment—qualities that have made the franchise an enduring favourite. As viewers settle in for high school adventures alongside Elle Woods, they are reminded of the character’s journey towards embracing her individuality while navigating the trials of adolescence.
The series not only seeks to entertain but also to inspire a new generation, ensuring that Elle Woods remains a beacon of confidence and resilience in the landscape of modern storytelling. As the legacy of “Legally Blonde” continues to evolve, it is clear that Elle’s journey is far from over.
