In a touching display of support, the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, has made a notable donation to an 11-year-old boy named Ted Haslam, whom she met during her recent undertaking of the Three Peaks Challenge. This challenge involved ascending the highest peaks of the United Kingdom—Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in England, and Snowdon in Wales—all within a span of 24 hours.

The initiative not only served as a physical challenge for the Princess but also aimed to raise awareness for life beyond cancer and garner support for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. This charity, now close to her heart following her own cancer diagnosis in 2024, is dedicated to providing critical care for cancer patients, a cause she is passionate about.
Ted, along with a supportive team of family and friends, joined the challenge to raise funds for Molly Ollys, a charity that previously provided him with play equipment during his time in hospital following a serious illness. At just three years old, Ted was diagnosed with an aggressive spinal tumour that left him paralysed. Nevertheless, his spirit shone through as he and his companions navigated the challenges of the climb, with his wheelchair being pushed up the mountains.

During their meeting on Ben Nevis, the Princess engaged warmly with Ted, asking about his wellbeing amidst chilly conditions. She marvelled at the many hikers who, despite the weather, opted to climb in light clothing. The conversation extended to Ted’s “lucky mascot,” a stuffed toy linked to the charity he was supporting. In a heartfelt manner, Kate expressed her admiration for his efforts, calling the Molly Ollys mission “fantastic,” and commending him for his determination.

Further demonstrating her commitment to supporting young Ted, the Princess made a notable financial contribution to his JustGiving fundraising page, reportedly between £1,000 and £2,000. Accompanying her generous gift was a personal note praising the inspiring nature of Ted and his team’s endeavours. She signed it simply with a “C,” as a personal touch to indicate it was from her, using “Catherine,” her first name, paired with her royal title, “Catherine Wales.”
The royal family has a long-standing tradition of interacting with the public using their titles rather than the surname Mountbatten-Windsor, which is officially recognised. This practice extends to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s children, who are known by the surname Wales in their academic lives.
The Princess of Wales undertook the Three Peaks Challenge with substantial support from Mountain Rescue. Upon completing the arduous trek, she was warmly welcomed by her husband, Prince William, and their three children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—as well as her parents and brother.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Kate expressed the personal significance of taking on this challenge. “I’m so grateful to be here, to be strong enough to walk these hills. But more importantly, it’s to give something back and acknowledge all the incredible work going on up and down this country,” she reflected. She emphasised the importance of connecting with individuals who have experienced cancer and underscored her commitment to highlighting their journeys.
The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity subsequently launched a dedicated fundraising page, inviting others to contribute to their ongoing efforts to support cancer patients in need of holistic care. After a year of facing her own health battles, Princess Kate announced her remission in early 2025.
Her encounter with Ted Haslam and the subsequent donation have resonated deeply, highlighting her empathy and dedication as a royal figure committed to supporting those affected by illness and championing initiatives that provide vital care and support. The Princess of Wales continues to inspire not only through royal duties but also through her personal engagement with causes that matter to her and those she meets along the way.
