In a heartfelt update shared via social media, Jonathan Van Ness, the beloved star of *Queer Eye*, disclosed that he and his husband, Mark Peacock, found themselves facing a challenging and emotional decision regarding their pets. The couple has been compelled to rehome their dog, George, after a distressing incident involving their cat, Liza Meownelli.
On 26th June, Van Ness recounted the events leading to this heartbreaking choice. He described a sudden confrontation between George and Liza while they were attempting to navigate the stairs at their home. The situation escalated unexpectedly as Liza swatted George, provoking a reaction that resulted in George’s accidental injury to Liza.

Van Ness explained the incident in a video posted to Instagram, stating, “Liza was pissed and she gave him a little swat and then George just kind of freaked out and went for her.” Unfortunately, the altercation led to severe consequences, as Liza sustained a broken jaw during the encounter.
Following the trauma, Van Ness immediately rushed Liza to Schwartzman Animal Hospital. He expressed his profound gratitude for the veterinary staff, crediting them with performing what he termed a “literal miracle” that ultimately saved Liza’s life. Despite initial fears that Liza might not survive, she managed to pull through, leaving Van Ness and Peacock confronting the painful necessity of finding a new home for George.

Reflecting on the day of the incident, Van Ness shared his disbelief at how quickly circumstances changed, recalling, “If you would’ve told me that morning that we were gonna be rehoming George that night, I would’ve said you were crazy.” He noted that up until that point, all of their pets had coexisted harmoniously, making the sudden escalation feel particularly shocking.
The couple had welcomed George into their home four years earlier, and the decision to part with him has been far from easy. Van Ness described the experience as “gut-wrenching,” emphasising the emotional toll it had taken on him and his husband. However, following careful consideration, they opted for a foster home for George, believing that he may thrive better as the sole dog in the household.
“The aim is that he’d feel more comfortable being the only dog,” Van Ness noted, revealing a silver lining in a painful situation. He reflected on the difficulties of such a decision, stating, “Today’s been really hard because I just am thinking about him so much.”
In his social media posts, Van Ness conveyed the deeper implications of their experience, advocating for understanding and empathy within pet families facing similar challenges. He concluded with a message of reassurance, stating, “This has been such a devastating event, and I’m sharing to say for every animal family, it’s not easy, but I’m so glad we can show up for these creatures & each other.”
As the couple navigates the complexities of this new chapter, they emerge not only as devoted pet owners but as advocates for the welfare of all animals in their care. The decisions surrounding pet ownership are seldom simple, and Van Ness’s candid sharing of his family’s trials resonates with many who have faced similar situations, highlighting the unconditional love and responsibility that comes with caring for pets.
