**Former NBA Player Malik Beasley Indicted in Betting Scandal**

Malik Beasley, a former professional basketball player, has been indicted for allegedly manipulating his performance during the 2023-24 NBA season in a significant sports betting scheme. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced the charges on Monday, revealing that the alleged conspiracy extends beyond Beasley, implicating fellow ex-NBA player Ed Davis and former agent Paolo Zamorano, among others.
The indictment asserts that Beasley, who previously played for the Milwaukee Bucks, engaged in activities aimed at fixing game performances to benefit numerous individuals who placed bets based on insider information regarding his intended performance. Alongside Beasley and Davis, three additional co-defendants are named: William Brown, Robert Gorodetsky, and Ernesto Plascencia.
According to the DOJ, all defendants are charged with several serious offences, including wire fraud conspiracy, bribery in sporting contests, and money laundering conspiracy. They are accused of working together to manipulate Beasley’s performance, thereby providing their associates with opportunities to profit from illegal wagers amounting to hundreds of thousands of pounds.
Federal investigations revealed that several individuals placed significant bets on game statistics, relying on information that allegedly originated from Beasley himself. The DOJ highlighted instances in which Beasley purportedly informed Davis of his intentions to underperform in upcoming games, allowing Davis to relay this information to other conspirators who would then place their bets accordingly.
In one particular instance during a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on 26 January 2024, Beasley reportedly informed Davis that he would intentionally record fewer rebounds than expected. This led him to finish the game with three rebounds, a figure that fell beneath the betting line, exemplifying the alleged collusion.
The indictment outlined how the defendants’ actions transformed professional basketball into a platform for criminal activities, compromising the integrity of the sport and leading to financial exploitation of legitimate sportsbooks. Joseph Nocella Jr., the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, stated that such schemes not only disrespect the game but also exploit and victimize the fans who follow it.
In a statement addressing the accusations, Beasley’s attorney, Steve Haney, emphasised the presumption of innocence and described an indictment as merely a document suggesting probable cause, rather than definitive evidence of wrongdoing. He urged the public to withhold judgment until all aspects of the case have been thoroughly examined.
The DOJ confirmed that several of the implicated defendants were arrested in various locations nationwide and are scheduled to appear in court in the Eastern District of New York in the near future. While the legal proceedings unfold, Beasley remains a figure of interest in the ongoing investigation into corruption within sports betting, a phenomenon that continues to raise concerns about the integrity of sporting events.
Having last played in the NBA for the Detroit Pistons in the 2024-25 season, Beasley has since taken his talents to Santurce in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional league in Puerto Rico, where he participated in 17 games last season.
The case illuminates broader issues concerning the intersection of professional sports and illegal betting, raising awareness of how the actions of a few can tarnish the reputation of an entire industry built on fair competition.
