A rare white peafowl, colloquially referred to as a white peacock, has been successfully reunited with its owners after escaping during transportation to its new residence in Florida. The incident unfolded in Ohio, where the bird was spotted roaming freely for several days before local animal control officers captured it.

The capture was confirmed in a Facebook post by the Brooklyn and Parma Heights Animal Control on June 23. The post detailed the adventurous journey of the white peafowl, which had managed to break free from its transport cage while travelling towards its new home. “CAPTURED!” the announcement read, accompanied by an image of the striking bird. The department described the peacock’s situation, noting that she had gotten loose from her owner during the trip.

Local residents had been actively involved in the search for the peafowl, and animal control expressed gratitude to the community for their support in locating the bird. “Thank you to everyone who helped get her home safe,” the department added in their post.
White peafowl are an unusual and rare colour variant of the Indian peafowl, distinguished by their striking snowy feathers. Unlike their more commonly seen blue counterparts, these birds get their unique appearance from a genetic condition known as leucism. This condition results in pigmentation loss in the feathers while preserving the normal colouration of their eyes. Therefore, although often mistakenly called white peacocks, these birds are more accurately referred to as white peafowl.
Peafowl possess the ability to fly, despite their notable size and lengthy tail feathers. Typically, they can only manage short flights, using their robust wings to reach elevated perches like rooftops or tree branches for roosting at night.
The story of this particular white peafowl had a happy ending. After a few days spent darting around the Ohio community, she was safely returned to her owners, who were no doubt relieved by the resolution of this surprising saga. Residents were likely entertained by the sight of the white bird gliding through their neighbourhood, showcasing the beauty and uniqueness of these remarkable creatures.
Following the recovery, the peafowl was able to continue her journey to Florida, where she now has a new home awaiting her. This incident serves as a reminder of not only the resilience of animals but also the significance of community involvement in supporting wildlife and ensuring their safe return to their owners.
As stories like this circulate, they highlight the wonderful, often unforeseen challenges that come with caring for exotic pets. The bond between an animal and its owner is indeed a special one, and this tale reiterates the importance of vigilance during transport and the kindness of communities coming together to assist in times of need.
