Sanford, Maine – On June 24, firefighters from the Sanford Fire Department (SFD) successfully carried out a dramatic rescue operation when a person was discovered trapped in a garbage truck. The individual had reportedly fallen asleep in a dumpster, which was subsequently emptied into the truck, leaving them injured and confined within the vehicle’s waste container.
According to a post on the SFD’s official Facebook page, emergency crews were dispatched to the scene after reports of an individual injured in the forward section of the garbage truck’s container. Upon arrival, firefighters determined that the person had been occupying a dumpster that had been collected and dumped into the truck during routine rubbish collection.
Fire officials swiftly upgraded the incident to a technical rescue response, enabling them to mobilise additional resources to assist with the high-stakes operation. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel were able to gain entry into the truck’s container safely. Following the successful rescue, the individual was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland for further assessment and treatment. Details regarding the extent of their injuries remain undisclosed at this time.
