In a recent announcement detailing the forthcoming holiday celebrations at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort, Disney Parks revealed a plethora of festive events scheduled for this season. Notable festivities such as Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, Jollywood Nights at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and the seasonal transformations of attractions like the Haunted Mansion and “It’s a Small World” were highlighted. However, the absence of the Grand Floridian’s gingerbread house was conspicuous in the updates.
The tradition of the life-size gingerbread house has been a significant decorative endeavour, showcasing the extraordinary talents of the resort’s pastry team. Each year, they meticulously constructed the Victorian-style gingerbread house using a variety of sweet ingredients, including gingerbread, honey, and chocolate. The impressive creations sometimes towered over 14 feet, with over 400 hours dedicated to baking alone, alongside an additional 160 hours for the detailed decoration.
On June 25, Disney World representatives confirmed to PEOPLE that the gingerbread house display would not be returning for the 2026 season. Instead, the resort’s culinary team will pivot to crafting miniature displays sprinkled throughout the property. This shift reflects a new approach towards holiday decorations at the Grand Floridian, though many will undoubtedly miss the grandeur of the full-sized house.
This decision comes nearly two years after visitors last experienced the charm of the Grand Floridian gingerbread house. During the 2025 holiday season, the iconic display was put on hold due to renovation work being conducted in the lobby of the hotel. As an alternative, Disney showcased seasonal displays at five other resorts, including the Contemporary Resort, BoardWalk Inn, Beach Club Resort, Animal Kingdom Lodge, and Wilderness Lodge, ensuring that festive spirit remained present across the park.
Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2024, this treasured tradition has been part of Disney’s seasonal offerings for more than two decades. In the early 2000s, the gingerbread house made regular appearances on the Travel Channel’s Holiday Magic at Walt Disney World programmes, hosted by Samantha Brown, further cementing its status as a seasonal highlight.
Despite the absence of the giant gingerbread house, Walt Disney World is set to kick off its holiday celebrations on 13 November, continuing through to 6 January 2027. The parks remain committed to providing an enchanting experience for guests, with promises of “larger-than-life holiday décor” across more than twenty hotel properties, ensuring that the festive spirit remains vibrant and welcoming.
Fans of the tradition are certainly hopeful that the Grand Floridian’s iconic gingerbread house will find a way to return in future seasons.
