Kate Gosselin, known for her time on the reality show “Jon & Kate Plus 8,” has recently made headlines by revealing the results of her rescue dog’s DNA test. The former television personality, who adopted a Belgian Malinois named Koda earlier this year, expressed both surprise and relief over the findings.

In a TikTok video released on June 23, Gosselin, 51, announced that she received the DNA results that would clarify Koda’s breed composition. “It’s a very exciting day,” she stated enthusiastically to her followers, adding that the revelation was “absolutely shocking.” Contrary to her initial belief that Koda was purely a Malinois, the test indicated that Koda is, in fact, 53% Belgian Malinois, alongside 38.7% Dutch Shepherd and 8.3% German Shepherd.

This unexpected mixture brought Gosselin a sense of joy. “I was so shocked,” she admitted, describing how the news brought her to tears of happiness, relieved that Koda was not 100% Malinois as she had initially thought. The celebrity’s openness regarding her emotional response reflects the strong bond she shares with her pet.

In a previous TikTok upload, Gosselin revealed the pressures she faced while raising Koda. The single mother shared an emotional update about the challenges of pet ownership. “I was just crying this morning,” she confessed, highlighting the overwhelming nature of her new responsibilities. Gosselin noted that Koda had caused some damage around the house, including ruining a rug and a dog bed belonging to her late pet, Nanuq.
Despite these challenges, Gosselin remained optimistic, stating, “At the end of the day, probably no one else would have saved her. So I know that we’re doing a good thing. We just have to hang in.” Her perspective underscores a commitment to adopting a rescue dog, acknowledging the challenges that often accompany such choices.
The discussion surrounding her ability to manage Koda’s needs sparked some controversy online. While many fans expressed support, others suggested that Gosselin and her new partner, Steve Neild, should have weighed the responsibilities involved in caring for a Malinois puppy before deciding to adopt. This criticism highlights the broader conversation about the responsibilities tied to pet adoption, especially for high-energy breeds known for their demanding care requirements.
Gosselin’s relationship with Neild, a former bodyguard, became public last year, following hints she dropped about their romance in late 2022. The couple has since showcased moments from their relationship on social media, indicating a significant shift in Gosselin’s personal life. In a previous post celebrating ten things she was “obsessed with,” she included her children, pets, travel adventures, and, notably, Neild, referring to him affectionately as “my boyfriend.”
Currently, Gosselin is balancing her role as a devoted mother to her eight children with the challenges of pet ownership. Her candid updates provide a glimpse into her life and the dynamic nature of family, as she navigates this new chapter with Koda and her evolving relationship with Neild.
As Gosselin continues to share her journey with her followers, it remains clear that, despite the hurdles, her love for her adopted dog and her children takes precedence. With a blend of humour, honesty, and a touch of vulnerability, she offers an authentic view of the ups and downs of modern motherhood, showcasing that amid the stress, joy and resilience shine through.
