Brittney Griner, the celebrated WNBA star, and her wife, Cherelle, have opened up about their challenging journey towards parenthood, particularly the impact of Brittney’s detainment in Russia in 2022. The couple, who now share their son Bash, born in July 2024, reflected on their experiences in an exclusive clip from the upcoming ‘ANDMOM’ podcast hosted by Skylar Diggins and Cassidy Hubbarth.

In the clip, Cherelle, 33, shared the complexities involved in planning their in vitro fertilisation (IVF) process during a tumultuous period. “We had to consider each other’s schedules when planning,” she explained, highlighting the importance of timing. The couple decided to proceed with their IVF plans during the interludes between Brittney’s WNBA seasons and after Cherelle’s graduation from North Carolina Central University School of Law.
Cherelle revealed the intimate nature of the IVF process, stating, “We said we have to use this window because it’s so many shots and it’s such an intimate process during that time. I didn’t want to do that with anybody else.” She emphasised the closeness of their bond, remarking that they had a supportive circle around them but preferred to undertake the journey as a couple.
Brittney, 35, echoed Cherelle’s sentiments, expressing her commitment to the process. “I wanted to be there every step of the way,” she said. As a testament to their partnership, she added, “I want to do shots. I want to play nurse.” Their determination to pursue parenthood together was palpable, reflecting a deep-seated connection that has only grown stronger despite the challenges they faced.
The impact of Brittney’s detainment in Russia, where she spent nearly ten months, undeniably weighed heavily on both individuals. Cherelle recounted the emotional strain they experienced during that period, stating, “I don’t even know if we both were in a soft place when we decided to still continue with our plan to have Bash.” Recognising the need to mitigate stress, she aimed to create a supportive environment for both of them.
The couple’s decision to move forward with their family plans was made amidst a backdrop of personal turmoil. As Cherelle noted, Brittney was still adjusting to life back in the United States and dealing with the myriad challenges associated with her release. “It was just a lot happening,” Cherelle recalled, shedding light on the complexities of their shared experiences.
Brittney has spoken previously about the emotional turmoil she endured during her detention. In an interview with PEOPLE, she reflected on her thoughts during that time, stating, “I went through so many emotions being locked up, and just thinking about nine years. We planned on having kids, and doing all these amazing things together, and now I’m thinking, ‘Is that going to happen? How can I ask her to wait?’”
Ultimately, they persevered, and the birth of their son marked a pivotal moment in their journey. At a recent event, Brittney joyfully announced Bash’s arrival, stating, “That’s my man. He is amazing.” She shared the profound love she felt when first meeting her son, describing how the experience eclipsed everything else in her life.
Reflecting on the initial weeks of parenthood, Brittney expressed the challenges that come with it. In a candid moment, she remarked, “I see why everybody says goodbye to sleep, especially in the early days, but it’s so rewarding. I come home, he’s smiling. My day’s just good then.”
As the Griners embrace this new chapter as parents, their story is a testament to resilience, love, and the power of partnership in the face of adversity. With their experiences shared openly, they continue to inspire others navigating their own paths to parenthood.
