In a statement released on 23 June, Upper Room expressed its regret regarding the incident, acknowledging the distress caused to fans and the public. The label explained that the T-shirt, described as a “vintage wardrobe item,” was chosen without full consideration of the historical implications associated with the symbol. “We understand the seriousness of the concerns that have been raised and deeply regret the distress this incident has caused,” the statement read.

Lee, now 26, was seen sporting the grey and blue shirt with the Confederate flag prominently displayed on the chest. The unintentional oversight led to a swift and fierce backlash from fans who expressed their disappointment and outrage over the insensitive choice of clothing. The photo was widely disseminated on social media, including through notable accounts such as Pop Crave.
Upper Room took full responsibility for the incident, noting that while measures were taken to ensure the symbol would not appear in official content, the image was mistakenly shared externally. The label stated, “We took measures to ensure that it would not be visible in any official content. Despite these efforts, the image was subsequently shared externally, resulting in the symbol being visible and causing understandable concern among members of the public.”
The label’s statement went on to clarify its stance on intolerance, stating, “Upper Room and the artist unequivocally reject and do not tolerate racism, hate, discrimination, or any form of intolerance.” The apology included a commitment to strengthen internal procedures to prevent such oversights in the future.
Both Upper Room and Lee expressed their sincere apologies to those who felt hurt or offended by the incident. While the response aimed to address the sensitivity surrounding the matter, it is clear that the ramifications of the photograph have left many fans disheartened.
Lee launched Upper Room in June 2025, shortly after departing from SM Entertainment and leaving his positions in NCT 127 and NCT Dream. He shared his motivations for establishing his own label in a handwritten note to fans, stating, “It’s a quest that I myself am scared about, but I know that it’s not for the worst.” His heartfelt message indicated his desire to pursue his music career on his own terms.
Since his separation from his previous label, Lee has ventured into solo endeavours, releasing his debut album, “The Firstfruit”, in April 2025. The album received critical acclaim and topped the charts in South Korea, affirming his status as a solo artist in a highly competitive industry.
As the K-pop scene continues to evolve, incidents like this underscore the importance of cultural sensitivity and awareness, especially among public figures. With its rich history and diverse range of fans, the K-pop community remains vigilant against any displays of intolerance or insensitivity in the industry.
In summary, the controversy surrounding Mark Lee’s choice of attire serves as a reminder for both artists and their management teams to remain acutely aware of the implications tied to cultural symbols. The ongoing dialogue about race and representation reflects wider societal issues, and it is crucial for influential figures like Lee to engage with these conversations meaningfully.
