In a world characterised by limitless options, former Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson East and NFL player Andrew East are advocating for the benefits of commitment through their recently released book, *The Courage to Commit: Embrace the Radical Power of Sticking With Something*. The couple aims to inspire readers to find joy and fulfillment by learning to embrace a more dedicated approach in their relationships, careers, and personal lives.

Having garnered attention for their popular relationship podcast, *Couple Things*, and cherished family moments shared on social media, the Easts were frequently approached by fans requesting a book about their life together. However, Shawn, 34, insists that a fluffy, surface-level book would not reflect their experiences. “We wanted to do something that was really meaningful and purposeful instead,” she expressed.

The couple’s journey has been marked by challenges, including struggles with miscarriages and Shawn’s battle with postpartum depression after their third child, Bear, was born. They view their experiences as fundamental to developing a mindset focused on commitment. “In our athletic careers, our marriage, our businesses, any success we’ve had has always been when we’ve truly stuck with it,” Shawn noted, highlighting their belief that real happiness comes through dedicated effort.

Their book is aimed at a generation plagued by decision fatigue—a reality that Andrew, 34, describes as often leading people to not make any choice at all. He recounted a conversation with someone uncertain about selecting a school, emphasising, “How about you choose one and make it your home?” This decision-making philosophy is one the couple embraces. They first decided to be a couple in 2012, following an introduction by Andrew’s brother, who had met Shawn during the 2012 Olympics.
Ten years post-marriage, the couple resides on a farm in Nashville with their three children: six-year-old daughter Drew, four-year-old son Jett, and two-year-old son Bear. Their journey to grow their family included painful moments, especially concerning the miscarriages preceding the births of their children. “That’s not something anyone prepares you for,” Shawn shared about her experience. “It’s such an emotional rollercoaster.”
Shawn also reflected on her postpartum challenges, attributing her struggles to a perhaps misplaced confidence after the easier births of her older children. “I think I went into it probably just way too confident because the first two had been easy,” she commented, highlighting the difficulties that can accompany new parenthood.
Despite the challenges of parenting, Shawn and Andrew are savouring every moment with their children, finding joy in their development. “The kids are incredible. It’s so fun to see who they are becoming,” she said, describing Drew’s artistic talents and her sons’ spirited personalities. However, the couple is clear that their idyllic farm life is not without its pitfalls, and they are open about the realities of marriage.
Shawn expressed frustration at the unrealistic portrayals of romance in films, which often depict relationships as effortless. “I got really tired of all these movies portraying romance as a fairy tale that’s so easy,” she remarked, adding that many may feel something is wrong if their own experiences don’t mirror that ideal. They advocate for seeking professional help, such as marriage counselling, to strengthen relationships.
The couple’s commitment to their family also extends to encouraging their children to engage in sports, seeing it as a way to instil valuable life lessons. Andrew, who enjoyed a career in football, emphasised that the focus should not be on sporting excellence but rather on the importance of mentorship and teamwork, as well as the dedication required to improve.
Their book encourages readers to resist the allure of “new shiny objects” and to find excitement in a deep understanding of one person or dedication to a particular craft. “We’ve found so much fulfilment and bettered our lives because of commitment,” Shawn said, expressing the joy that has arisen from their own dedication.
Now available at bookstores, *The Courage to Commit* presents a heartfelt exploration of commitment in an age dominated by choices, encouraging readers to look deeply at the relationships and pursuits that define their happiness. The Easts have undoubtedly crafted a message that resonates with many, emphasising that while commitment may require effort, it ultimately leads to a more rewarding and fulfilling life.
