Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson Township, New Jersey, is gearing up for what promises to be a monumental addition to its attractions: the yet-to-be-named roller coaster known as “Project Purple.” This ambitious undertaking is set to become one of the five tallest roller coasters in the world upon completion, with current heights reached indicating that it is already the tallest structure in the park.

As of June 22, vertical construction of this colossal roller coaster has reached an impressive height of 315 feet, according to park representatives. Noting that the work is ongoing, the statement added that further growth is expected, with completion targeted for August 2026. After construction wraps up, park officials plan to conduct an extensive safety testing period lasting three to four months, ensuring that every detail is perfect before the ride opens to the public in 2027.

The vibrant purple track and its supporting beams are now visible from several miles away, providing a striking sight for visitors to the theme park this summer. Those venturing into Great Adventure will have the opportunity to witness the evolution of this ride as it takes shape week by week, much to the keen interest of roller coaster enthusiasts and thrill-seekers alike.
Although many specifics about this secretive project remain under wraps, Ryan Eldredge, the park’s director of sales and marketing, shared some tantalising details. He mentioned that a massive crane, soaring to 450 feet, has been erected, giving a glimpse into the height of the roller coaster itself. For context, the tallest roller coaster globally is the Falcon’s Flight located at Six Flags Qiddiya City in Saudi Arabia, which stretches up to 640 feet.
The completed attraction is poised to break multiple records, with Eldredge stating that there will be six distinct records associated with it. Among the standout features of “Project Purple” are three launches incorporated into the design, one of which includes a rare inverted launch. This thrilling element promises to propel riders from approximately 60 to 80 mph — all while suspended upside down.
The anticipation surrounding the new roller coaster is particularly pronounced given the recent history of Kingda Ka, which was beloved by fans before its closure in February 2025. With its spectacular 45-storey ascent and a breathtaking launch speed of 128 mph achieved in under five seconds, Kingda Ka was a high watermark for amusement rides. Eldredge has assured enthusiasts that “Project Purple” will provide a similar thrill, both in terms of its height and the exhilarating way it launches riders.
While preparations for “Project Purple” progress, Six Flags Great Adventure has also made strides in other areas of the park. The recent opening of Shoreline Pier at The Boardwalk introduces a revitalised boardwalk experience, complete with five new attractions, traditional boardwalk food offerings, games, and more for visitors to enjoy.
Beyond New Jersey, the Six Flags brand is busy expanding its legacy further with another ambitious launch planned at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington. The forthcoming ride, dubbed Tormenta Rampaging Run, is expected to be the tallest, fastest, and longest of its kind, alongside being the first-ever giga dive coaster towering between 300 and 400 feet.
Initially slated for a June 26 unveiling, the grand opening of Tormenta was postponed due to protracted testing procedures. Park officials have yet to confirm a new date for this much-anticipated attraction, keeping fans eagerly awaiting updates on its arrival.
As the countdown to “Project Purple” continues, fans of roller coasters and thrill rides alike are likely to keep a close eye on developments at Six Flags Great Adventure, eagerly awaiting what is set to become a new pinnacle in the world of amusement parks. With the high expectations surrounding these thrilling new attractions, Great Adventure aims to solidify its reputation as a premier destination for adrenaline seekers across the region.
