Mom Recalls Being Flipped Over by Sneaker Wave While Saving Her Daughter. Later, ‘Everything Went Black,’ She Says

A mother from Sacramento has shared her harrowing experience after she and her young daughter were swept away by a sudden sneaker wave at Baker Beach in San Francisco last week. Vanessa Bull described the traumatic incident that nearly resulted in tragedy and expressed her determination to keep her children away from the ocean for the foreseeable future.

On the afternoon of June 18th, Vanessa took her children to Baker Beach, a popular coastal area renowned for its picturesque views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Unbeknownst to her, the surf conditions were perilous that day. As they settled in, a wave nearly nine feet high unexpectedly pulled her daughter, Mireina, out to sea.

“I looked back and all I could see was her head above the water,” Bull recalled. In a frantic bid to reach her daughter, she plunged into the surf. Despite her best efforts, a massive wave crashed down, obscuring her view of Mireina. “I tried my hardest to get her,” she said, highlighting the sheer terror of the moment.

Fortunately, the quick-thinking mother managed to seize onto Mireina’s sweater just before another wave struck, sending both of them spinning in the turbulent water. In a terrifying few moments, the pair were swept further into the Golden Gate Strait, but help was on the way. Bystanders, witnessing the distressing scene, rallied to assist the duo and managed to pull them to safety just before first responders arrived.

“I remember handing her over, and then everything went black after that. My body went limp,” Bull explained, recounting how the ordeal took a toll on her physical strength. Rescue personnel from the San Francisco Fire Department arrived shortly thereafter, providing urgent medical care on the beach before transporting the pair to local hospitals in serious condition.

Both mother and daughter have since been recovering from the event, although the incident has left a lasting impact on Bull. She indicated that the frightening experience would deter her from bringing her children back to the ocean anytime soon, saying, “I definitely do not plan on taking my kids to the ocean for a very long time.”

Officials have characterised the events at Baker Beach as a stark reminder of the hazards posed by sneaker waves along California’s coastline. According to the fire department, these unexpected waves can surge far up the beach without warning, posing a significant risk to beachgoers.

The beach at Baker Beach, unlike many others in California, does not have lifeguard towers, leading authorities to remind the public of the inherent dangers. The National Park Service does conduct limited beach safety patrols, but visitors must remain vigilant, as they are advised that these areas are considered dangerous and non-swimming.

Bystanders and beachgoers have been cautioned to adhere to safety guidelines when visiting coastal areas. The fire department emphasised that individuals should never turn their back on the ocean, stay alert, and keep children and pets close at hand. Unfortunately, history has seen an increase in both fatal and near-fatal incidents along the California coastline, making these warnings all the more pressing.

If anyone witnesses someone in distress in the water, they are urged to call 911 immediately rather than attempting to intervene personally. The recent rescue serves as a sobering reminder of the ocean’s unpredictable nature, even in seemingly calm conditions.
