Scott Shreiman, a 58-year-old avid athlete from California, recently shared his inspiring journey from suffering debilitating hip pain to completing a marathon just a year after hip replacement surgery. His story underscores not only the benefits of advanced medical technology but also the resilience of the human spirit in the face of physical adversity.

Schreiman, who proudly crossed the finish line of his third Ironman race in 2024, found himself confronting an unexpected challenge shortly thereafter. Despite his commitment to fitness, he had been struggling with significant hip pain caused by advanced osteoarthritis. In fact, he had limited his activities prior to the race, opting for indoor training on an elliptical and exercise bike rather than outdoor runs and rides. “Basically, I was untrained going into the race,” he confessed, reflecting on his thoughts leading up to the event.

Following a commendable performance during the Ironman, which entails a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a full marathon, Shreiman faced intense physical discomfort. After battling through the latter half of the marathon despite his injury, he realised just how serious his condition had become when he found it challenging to walk post-race. His wife assisted him in gathering his things before they returned to their accommodations, highlighting the stark contrast between the triumphant finish and the pain he faced shortly after.
Upon returning home, the persistent hip pain led him to seek medical advice. A week following the race, a doctor confirmed that the damage was beyond repair, and Shreiman would need a hip replacement operation. In March 2025, he underwent successful surgery, which he hailed as life-changing. “Dr. Miller did an incredible job,” he remarked, noting the surgeon’s use of cutting-edge robotic technology that aids in mapping the unique structure of each patient’s anatomy before surgery, contributing to a more tailored recovery.
This state-of-the-art approach allowed for a smoother surgical process and significantly improved outcomes during rehabilitation. The operation not only relieved Shreiman’s pain but set him on course for a remarkable recovery. He dedicated himself to a rigorous physical therapy regimen and celebrated a major milestone by completing a half-marathon six months post-surgery.
“My fitness and strength recovered quickly,” Shreiman noted, although he admitted the recovery was challenging. The hard work in physical therapy and the strict training schedule filled him with a sense of accomplishment as he gradually reclaimed his active lifestyle. Remarkably, he reported that the surgically replaced hip felt more solid than his original hip, although he acknowledged that some strengthening work remained needed.
Having successfully completed his first marathon after surgery, Shreiman found immense satisfaction in overcoming the odds. “The most rewarding aspect was proving to myself that I could still return to the fitness level I once had,” he explained, emphasising the impact of his recovery journey. His experience has led him to advocate for those in similar situations, encouraging people to consider hip replacement surgery if they need it, and to remain attuned to the signals their bodies send, particularly during the recovery phase.
“If you’re active and want to return to sports as soon as possible following surgery, you can absolutely do it,” Shreiman insisted, urging others to work hard, listen to their bodies, and take recovery seriously. “The surgery gave me my life back. Don’t be afraid of it if you need it. Go for it!” he advised, offering motivation to anyone contemplating similar procedures.
Looking ahead, Scott Shreiman has set his sights even higher. He plans to compete in a half Ironman later this year and is determined to run the New York Marathon in November, aiming to finish in under four hours. His journey serves as a powerful reminder of the vital role of persistence and modern medicine in regaining a fulfilling and active lifestyle.
